hi, im new to this board, i recently bought a 99zx2 escort for my winter car/work car. I am curious how much power and the 2.0L zetec handle? Can the four speed auto handle the horsepower? I have seen people mod these engines and not get too much more power, where i work we put a set of cams, full exhaust and a s/c on a 02 zx3 and it didnt seem any faster. Can these engines be bored or stroked, i perfer to make horsepower from natrually aspirated instaed of a blower o turbo......any answers/suggestions will help........Thanks

Just a thought... if you're used to V8 power then nothing that can be done to a four cylinder is going to make it "seem any faster" to you. You're not likely to make enough power going N/A to satisfy your wants - the V8 engines can show big gains by doing something as simple as changing the exhaust system; four cylinders are a horsepower here, a few horsepower there, etc.

Okay, well I just saw this sentence ^^ and that coupled with the fact that you drive a V8 Camaro has me thinking you won't be too impressed with any N/A mods, if a supercharged Focus didn't seem any faster. That's why I said what I did.

The ATX will handle mild upgrades but anything that's going to make a lot more power will mean having to work on the ATX, too. I suggest you check out the forums at www.focusmotorsports.com - focaltech is a member there, he's very Focus engine knowledgable, as is KicknZX3, who is a member both here and on that forum.

to get ne real power outa the zx3 n/a your talkin bout gettin into like 8k rpms, with a whole new stage 3 head unit, stage 4 racegrind cams, everymod you can think of. racing intake mani, sage 4 clutch and stuff like that. Hey focus central did it with their 12.9 all motor focus. I think it would be badass but your talkin bout lots of work, lots of money, and lots of upkeep with those kinda engines. Your zx2 will be more workable than our zx3's because your starting out with more power. thats all iknow about them....i use to have a 85 vette so i know how it feels to make a major downgrade in power.

there car runnin 12's was on slicks with dual tb's a car that couldn't be driven on the street and pectel.

truthfully, keep the car stock. especially on the auto trans. it can hold moderate power. to gain a few ponies, just throw an ice-man intake/udp/cat-back...many can be found used for a pretty decent prices. these cars can be pretty fun, but it ends there.

to stroke the motor you are looking at a rediculous price for a .1 litre gain. and only about 7-8% gain on the dyno. anything u do to the car unless a blower/turbo...you won't like the daily driver. believe me.

i appreicate the respones, i just dont know anything about the aftermarket performance of these motors ill probably end up with a new head, intake, cams, and exhaust....what the hell throw a bottle on it too....if it still feels slow ill just hop in my z28

it takes a lot more money to make horsepower with a 4 banger than it is to do with a v8. I like v8's myself, but in my situation im driving a focus. But i agree, if you supercharged a focus and it still felt slow...i doubt anything is going to satisfy your want for power except a v8. But some people have stated mods that will help out with power and what not. I dunno if you can do a v8 swap into a zx2, its been done in the zx3

yea its now my nice day/weekend driver approx 450hp on motor, gas hog but its worth it
dynoed at 440hp 503tq to the wheels, but that was before the cam install and a pcm tune

Nice, that is what I thought. It would be hard to get a stock block to 600 HP without giggle juice. You would have to build the bottom end a lot to get it near 600HP. Those 5.7 L are big engines so I think a 150 shot is pretty good on a stock block.

Theres no replacement for displacement. However that little ZX2 with moderate mods can smoke your Z28 through some twsities, or raod course or auto X. so there is a use for the nimble little thing.

I used to drag race, but i went to raod course event with some pepole i know and got hooke on that. I have 1963 galaxie to show off in a straight line and my focus for winedy.

yeah there is. its called forced induction [:)~]

but yeah, im with kickn on that. if you mod it too much that auto tranny will give you nothing but problems. you wont be able to pull the torque that you will want out of it to make the increase too noticeable with that tranny. you can upgrade the tranny and all that, but thats a lot of money to spend on a winter car. i say stick with bolt ons, maybe the bottle but u probably wont take your snow plower to the track [thumb]

no its not its about 8ftlbs less tq, it just makes up for it with weight, and powerband. An atx zx2 will not get ito the 15's with out tranny troubles of some kind, and it takes work, i know a guy that has a nice bit of work in an atx and runs 16.1(intake cam, cam gear, header, exaust, intake, custom chip, TB) same work in a 5spd zx2 would be in the 14's.

The motor can handel close to 400hp crank if it is built right, but the auto tranny can only take about 110-113whp and not start to give you troubles.

look at the european escorts, cosworth did a number on those, and cosworth has lots of parts out there for escorts, not sure which will will on your car, but it's worth looking into
nothing from a UK escort will work on an amercan escort, they are 2 completly difference cars.

If you want to make power out of the auto tranny and dont mind spending some get the Level Ten kit for the tranny. Either way if you want the tranny to last, get a better tranny cooler and a chip. The stock tranny cooler gets clogged easily and begins to overheat on a regular basis and will of course cook the tranny. Also I would suggest changing the tranny fluid to something like B&M trickshift or some other synthetic....
