The rack is designed to have fluid covering it at all times, if you lose that the piston will lock up and then you get to replace a rack too.

Entirely possible all you needed was a hose to begin with, but drove long enough to tear up pump. Pumps actually don't go bad that often, generally more likely for owner to drive too long with popped hose, pump runs dry and then junk.

So, see, going longer most likely not to your benefit here.
