I’ve had my 2014 SE 5-door since November of last year and have a little over 5000 miles on it now. A couple of times now, I have started the car and the “S” for Sport mode isn’t displayed in the cluster, instead there is an “L” as if the transmission were a standard 6-speed instead of the SelectShift 6-speed. Has anyone else run into this? Once I shut the car off and restart it the “S” usually reappears. I just want to make sure I don’t have a serious problem lurking in my DCT. [???:)]

I believe that problem would originate in the BCM (which stores the vehicle configuration data that is read by other modules) or the IPC itself.

Maybe you missed a car payment and the car is locking out some features. [facepalm]

Any more out of this? Did you find the problem? My 2014 se did this to me too tonight. Had the oil changed at the dealer and didn't notice till I got home it had an L instead of S. I restarted the car and it went back to S.

No, it still does it every now and then, I think it may have something to do with the remote start. I always goes back to "S" the next time I start the car so I haven't bothered to take it in.

I am kinda knowledgeable about this. My first question is if you have a plus and minus on your shifter. My second question is did you ever have 'S'? My comment is this. The DPS6 DCT transmission is the same across all auto models.

're read the post, I retract my first two questions. But my comment remains the same. Do you have a way to get the Focccus software?

My 2014 Titanium with Select Shift with 3,700 miles is switching back and forth between "S" and "M"...sorry, "L", and it is occurring whether remote started or otherwise. The car always returns to "S" after setting for a spell.

As I recall when an "L" is displayed, moving the shifter into the "S" position will NOT change the "L" to "S", but the car DOES respond to the +/- buttons on the shifter WITHOUT displaying the gear number.

Whether in "S" or "L" the car is running beautifully, and the DCT so far is outperforming my expectations. With the exception of one 24 month period, I've driven manual transmissions for the past 20+ years. I am really loving the way this car will scoot, and the smooth shifts.

I haven't tested if the +/- toggle works when it shows "L", next time it happens I will test that out. I have checked the last few times I used the remote start and the "S" was there so I think I was mistaken there.

I think it's just a software bug. I noticed this also, but I haven't got the procedure 100% to reproduce it. I've never seen it happen if I get in the car and start it up right away. It only happens when I get in, wait for awhile (I think the display in the HUD goes to sleep), and then when you start up the car and the display comes back on, it shows L instead of S. You can still drive it manually in S mode, you just won't have an indicator of what gear you're in, but given your speed and RPMs you can probably figure it out. Or better yet, just turn off the ignition and restart the engine, and it goes away.

^^^ Could be an "in between condition" bug from what you just mentioned, I've seen other posts on the car going to sleep to the point of not starting without turning the key off & on again when starting is delayed enough after first turning the key on.

Hi guys,

If you're going to take a trip to the dealer to have this checked out, please let me know so I can look into additional options. I'll need your VIN, mileage, best daytime phone number, full name, and dealer name/location via PM.

Hi Meagan,
I have confirmed, it has something to do with my remote start. I have a dealership installed Ford remote start system. When I start the car with the remote and then get it and put the key in and turn it to on without shutting the car off first, the 'S' is not there, there is an 'L' in it's place. If I shut the car off and restart it the 'S' appears. I will say that I have changed the settings on my remote start so that it does not shut off the car as soon as I open the door, but if I put my foot on the brake it will turn off. I made this change following instructions that I found on here to access the settings for the remote start module. Should I bother taking it in or is this just a "flaw" in the programming of the system that it doesn't play nice with the SelectShift transmission? Any advice you can give would be great! I will also send this info to you in a PM.

I don't think it has anything to do with remote start. I don't have remote start. Anytime the car door is unlocked and you wait awhile before starting up the car (long enough for the display in the HUD to go to sleep), you will have this problem.

I'm not a technician, so I'm unable to troubleshoot or diagnose concerns, but since the remote start is dealer installed, they'll be in the best position to assist if that's the root of the symptoms.

I was incorrect, the remote start system does not always trigger the "L" mode to show up.
