This is the first time in a long time and probably the last time I take my car any place to get serviced. They replaced my leaky rack and as the title says... I have no power steering at all. I left it there for them to fix but I'm trying to do my own brain storming to figure out the issue.

My thoughts:
1. line kinked when they replaced the rack.
2. crap in the lines.
3. non SVT rack?
4. bad rack
5. ............

They already tried to pull the "you need a pump" line. "My guy (porter) said the steering was heavy when he pulled it in." I called BS. It was fine when I parked it. NO different than my GF's or any other Focus I've driven. It wouldn't go from ok to 0 assist in an instant.

The only reason it would need a pump is if they didn't blow the lines out and crap made it to the pump.

Anything I'm missing?

Hhmmm then something isn't right. I wonder if they messed up the lines or if something is clogging them like you think? Only way to know for sure is to check their work or try to talk to a manager or somebody higher up and explain everything and have them check it over. Other than that I don't have much advice besides replacing the pump or taking it somewhere else and have it checked out.

Somebody could air pressure check the rack. Some racks have a one way check valve at the pressure hose to rack attachment, if so it needs to be there. The pump could have trash in the bypass too to simply pump fluid in a circle in the pump reservoir and not pressurize the line.

Probably the rack. Wouldn't be surprised to find torn piston seal or none at all with the competence rebuilders show nowadays.

I've never changed a rack in a Focus but I do know that some Fords have a small re-stricter that goes in the rack before the pressure line gets attached. Generally these do not come with the new rack. I worked at Ford dealerships for years and replaced many Taurus racks, none came with the re-stricter installed. This could cause your no power steering issue. If the shop still has your core rack I would see if they left that piece in the old one. Another thing, on some Fords the holes that the pressure and return lines attach to on the rack have the same size hole and threads. They may have accidentally swapped the lines onto the wrong ports.
