Yes they have variable valve timing. Also they have a better suspension, tuned header, better intake, better head work, and super aggresive cams for a 40hp bump over the regular focus.
Typical mods are intake, ORP or HFC, and toms tune. Forced induction is the best way to go if you have the cash though theres a couple turbos and two roots supercharger options although they are harder to find since they are both discontinued. A lot of people like the procharger setup as will if you want a centrifugal supercharger. Check around on the vendor sites here in this forum and you can get a better idea of the aftermarket support.
