If you had $5k to Increase Your SVTf Performance?

I bought a 2004 SVT focus USED shown in photo (German Shepherd not included). I have had it for about 2 months and love driving it. However it is pretty sluggish with regards to torque when under 4,000rpm. I am totally happy with the handling but would like to improve overall horsepower and low to mid range torque.

I have no plans to race it but I do want to be able to drive fast and have better accelleration off the line.

Any suggestions on how to apply a maximum of $5,000 to tune and improve my performance? If I can spend less to accomplish what I want that would be cool. I also plan on having a reputable mechanic do the work because I am not mechanically inclined.

spend $325 for a SCT flasher, or the 4-500 for a predator. then wait for the powerworks supercharger to come out for the svt, and get that dyno tuned. you might want to get an ORP to help your exhaust breathe a bit better, and maybe a CAI for the intake side. overall, you'll be spending probably close to $6000 if you do the installs yourself. it's the easiest way to get the kind of performance you want and retain stock street manners

If you don't want to supercharge it, get an intake, throttlebody, underdrive pulleys, cam gear, then once everything is installed, get it dyno tuned. Talking about $1300 or so if you install parts yourself and get it tuned professionally.

ORP's are illegal (talking HUGE fines!), as they remove the cat, and make your exhaust MUCH louder... I wish people would say that when they recommend them! [thumb] They really aren't worth it IMO, unless you install it at the track and remove it when you are done.

A tune is the first thing you should do!!! Throttle body, intake, coil pack, live wires, plugs, Focus sport cams when they come out, VF lower mount, a little more here, a little more there.

There is plenty you can do for half of the 5k to make your car a much more fun car to drive.

Guys, suppose they have $5k right now and can buy all the parts. A tune should be one of the LAST things to do! Get all the power adders installed BEFORE you tune if you have $5k right now!

^^^ agreed. Personally, if I had the money, i would get a JRSC, intake & TB, screamin demon coil and wires and then get the tune. Then short shifter and rear engine mount. If its your daily driver i wouldnt do tons so it loses the everyday drivablility of it, just improve it. Then maybe get front and rear strut bars, and then save the rest, you may want something else down the road. just my 3 cents[thumb]

If I had just bought a new car and had 5k in cash I would have went ahead and put that down on a cobra.

I understand what you are saying toolman but my suggestion to get a tuner is to improve things now. Getting a new tune later is super easy.

My main point is you dont have to spend 5k to totally change the enjoyment factor of this car.

I would have to say JRSC, screamin demon coil and live wires, vf engineering mount, short shifter, magnaflow exhaust, cold air intake, then the tune. Man this makes me wish I had 5K sittin around.

Thanks for all the recommendations. I think I am going to start out with a AEM cold air intake and buy the predator tuner kit and possibly a throttle body. I know that is no where near $5k but I am going to do a little at a time until I am satisfied with the performance. Mainly I want to improve the mid to low range torque.

Check out my list and I got the ORP used and very thing else was bought new, I spent about 2,200.

AEM Cold Air Intake, FC Throttle Body, VF Rear Engineering Mount and a great predator tune will get you low-end torque.

JRSC and Tune . Looking right at 3.5k. Youll be around 220 bhp with plenty of low end TQ and midrange HP. Plus awesome driveability and increased fun factor.
That's what I'm planning [;)] . But if you want to create a monster svtf get toms turbo [burnout] svtf turbo

5Grand!? JMO.....you can waste 5grand on it to be a 13 second car or buy a $4,500 87-93 stang and go 13's. I would just get a few bolt ons for the Foci then buy a fast car.

You never did say if forced induction was down the road, but I still remain firm on the popular bolt ons... maybe a quaife, clutch, flywheel and some lighter rims down the road... If you want lots of power a Vortech or turbo should be on order, but if you want some decent power a JRSC should be fine.

Mostly it depends on how you feel about the vehicle overall... I know power is my main concern (and I'm addressing it as I can afford it, and I'm sure it's most everybodies concern), but handling or looks may be others concern. If you want lots of power, forced induction all the way!

I am definetely considering a Super Charger but not a Turbo. I have heard of stories of Turbo's burning out over an extended period of time. Plus as I understand it the SC adds power through out the powerband unlike a turbo. With that said I think I will go with a JRSC if I decided to put on a SC since I trust the brand and they have been around for awhile.

I am totally happy with the looks of the car and do not plan any major exterior mods. The only thing I have added for exterior mods are TYC Altezza Euro Tail Lights in Chrome which the photo does not show. They look awesome on my SVTf and were very easy to put on. The TYC chrome tail lights really looks great and accents my front high intensity headlights.

Also, I have been thinking of doing some Streetglow lighting in blue for the underside. I play Need for Speed Underground on my PS2 and I am racing a Focus that I configured to look almost exactly like mine in real life and the streetglow blue lights looks really cool in the game.

Sounds like a good plan - except those chrome Altezzas. Id suggest these very sexy lights. This isnt my car it belongs to another FF member, itsmemorphious. Every time I see these things I wanna get them.

A supercharger takes power away from an engine to create power. A turbo uses exhaust gases to spool the turbo up and force air into the engine. Thus a turbo is much more efficent in terms of generating horsepower.

Turbos dont burn out , You can shut them off to quick after long runs but they dont just burn out , I have a factory 84 SVO Mustang turbo car with the origional turbo and it has 118,000 miles on it

I have had as many issues with SC eating the bearings as i have turbos

As for the powerband the ONLY place the jrsc beats a turbo in the powerband is from 1800 to 2800RPM , from 2800 on the turbo`s TQ will not only beat its TQ but do it by 2 times the TQ gain in some places with the same boost

Look at it like this , The jrsc jumps up in TQ early then flat lines almost straight across the dyno where a turbo starts making good TQ at 2800 then keeps pull UP , UP , UP to about 5500 then starts to lay over and it is this TQ that your after , unless you just want to be able to say its SC and dont care about TQ

Silver03SVT,

What lights are you referring to? I did not see a pic attached.

Thanks for the reply and education Tom. I will have to admit I am a mechanical idiot and the extent of what I can do is change my own oil and filter. I was basing that comment on turbo vs SC on what I have heard and not studied.

I do plan on buying your Predator Tuner. The only internal mod I have on my SVTF is the replacement of the stock box air filter with a K&N filter from the Auto parts store. Not really a mod I know.

Will I notice a increase performance with my stock SVT with your tune?
