How to Improve low end Torque

Hi Guys, been lurking while getting used to my 04 SVTF ZX5 with Euro Package. I have lots of cars (this is #7), bought it for fun, and it is that. No unreal expectations, and the car satisfies and delivers beyond expectations in almost every category - except one.

This car has horrendous low rpm throttle response. With AC on I almost stall, and feel no response until about 2000rpm. Even with AC off I call throttle response "marginal" at low rpms. I also have what appears to be a "sticky throttle", but upon further inspection I realized that with no throttle input air pressure is creating backpressure against the throttle body and the throttle feels like its "stuck". Pop the throttle (break the vacuum) and all is OK. If I remove the air filter problem goes away too.

This, IMHO, sucks, and not in a good way.

So I have a very different question from archives about "performance" air intakes. I have no interest in more horsepower (remember 7 cars - 2 Porsches, SHO, etc.). What I want is the "best" solution for a responsive throttle at low rpms. Will I get this with a simple K&N or ITG drop in filter, or do I need aftermarket air intake?

Remember, I just want a throttle that doesn't feel stuck (makes stop and go traffic a bear), and just a wee bit more response below 2000 to not feel like I am going to stall.

I can tell the folks here can answer this question if I have stated it correctly. I hope I have. And I really hope this isn't to bland for most of you racers...

PS - The Recaros in the Euro Package are A+, better than my Scheel racing seat.

Wouldn't a 65mm throttle body be a good bet?

... oh, and welcome![welcome]

underdrive pulley

In your post the first thing you mention is how the car performs with the AC on.

You might want to look into a UDP, you could blast the air all day and feel no parasidic effects.

First of all, I suggest going back to one of your porsches if you want low end torque :-D Hard to beat a 911...but then again it's hard to beat the SVT for its package!

I took off my short air intake snorkle and noticed a difference in throttle response, plus a nice sound. I suggest trying that. But as far as torque....

By the way i'm a newb myself! What's up y'all, the focus SVT is the shit by far!!!

First off Hello, and welcome to focusfanatics. [;)]

Second, the low end slug you feel may be associated with the ECU. See Ford has come out with several ECU reflashes for the SVTF to help with numerous problems. The last one was YRF0, this may or may not help with some of your troubles. Do a search in the SVT Forum for YRF0 and your will find the TSB# and information about what it will correct.

If this also helps even with all of my mods, I too still feel a slow throttle response untill the RPM's rise on up. Dont get me wrong, dont feel it as much as I did when it was stock. I just contribute this problem to having a low end torque car and a tall first gear. [;)]

ooo same car as I have what color did you get....and yes 1st gear sucks, my driveway is a steep hill if I have to stop at the top I either kill it or burn the tires hehe

He has a 2004 SVTF.
I hope that Ford would have burned the lastest ECU program and performed all outstanding tsb's.

Anyway to tell?
Just got an '04 SVTF myself.
Is there a code or anything to look for on the emissions sticker to see what ECU program you have?

After reading/searching for a while on the site for "reflash":
I'm not sure if they changed anything in the computer in '04,
as I am experiencing the "surging" in the 2,200-2,800 rpm range.
Perfect. [:(]
Because that's right at 25mph in 2nd, and 35mph in 3rd for around town driving.
Otherwise, I'm most satisfied!
I'm starting to call this vehicle my new "pocket rocket". [:D]

You want more low end torque? I don't have an SVT but I know the regular zetec feels pretty strong for a 4 banger down low. Go drive a VTEC Honda 4 cylinder and keep the revs below 3K, then you'll see that the zetec isn't that weak down low.

The air conditioner is always on. even when it isn't on in the car the clutch is engaged so to have a throttle responce and idle that is different is impossible. Call SVT and ask them about this your self. As far as low end torque, an air filter or a CAI isn't going to help at 2K to 3K rpm this is a four banger all the power is going to come from 3K to 7K rpm.

Sounds like you need a trip to the dealership...something is definitely amiss with a "sticking throttle" and such...Also the A/C problem sounds like you are a reflash candidate...as far as our A/C always being on it is exactly the opposite; the thoughtful engineers at ford got one right here and designed the A/C to actually kick off (when you have it on) when you are accelerating hard...I noticed that on a hot day and I got on it the A/C would momentarily stop blowing cold air but as soon as I slowed down or reached my desired cruising speed the cold air would return...I thought something was up so I looked it up...You'll have to take my word for this because it was a while ago and I don't remember where I read it...

I put a cheapo open air filter and I am fairly happy with that but I would like a better fitting system like the AEM or the Focus sport but I am poor and we will work with what we have...

To try to help answer how you can help some of that "bog" down low, I really started to notice a difference after I installed an FC throttle body, Ram air intake and Underdrive Pulley for starters. Lightened flywheel would definitely help as well but I've been putting that off for another day until I do an LSD.......hope that helps some.
