Yes, the DPFE goes out much more commonly than the valve itself does. And can easily make that problem. Block the EGR line like friend said and if stops then change the DPFE sensor not valve. Even more so if the sensor is not mounted on the firewall, the ones with the very short 2 inch hoses have had nothing but h-ll. Hose too short, sensor then gets water to go bad. I extended my '02 unit with 2 foot long hoses and no more trouble.

Trouble could be ignition too, coils crack commonly to act like that.
