Freeing up my cigarette lighter and incorporating my XM power adaptor behind the dash

I would like to put the power adaptor for my XM receiver behind the dash. I have a cigarette lighter extension cord similar to this one but with only one female plug. I want to cut the female plug off with a few inches of wire sticking out and attach the positive wire on this plug to the positive wire going to my cigarette lighter outlet in my dash. I’m just not sure where I should ground it.

Is this right?

Or should I place the ground elsewhere?

There are 3 wires connecting to the cig lighter.

1 for the ring light, 1 power, and 1 ground.

I just took my iPod charger apart and connected the power and ground to the power and ground behind the cig lighter. There's usually a small circuit board in the plug, so you need to keep that in-line.

I will be posting photos of my Sirius / iPod install within a few days.

There is no light around the lighter on the '05. There's a black wire and an orange with a yellow stripe. I'm assuming the orange one is the +12v.

No light? Wow, that's an interesting corner to cut.

Anyway, yeah, the black is ground, and the orange is power.

Here's the inside of my iPod Charger plug...

I connected the power to power, and the two grounds to ground to my Sirius
tuner. But you can run lines direct to the back side of the lighter.

My Sirius wires go to the lighter.
