Fan removal

Well my time has come for the pcv hose R&R as the car shows the symptoms. I will tackle the repair myself as it isn't all that hard. Reading up on things first I've decided to remove the cooling fan assembly only and then use the correct combination of extensions for the manifold bolts. This is actually the first issue the car has ever had.

Looking at the fans from under the car I am wondering about the trick in getting it out. Seems like it is hanging on 4 brackets and all one needs to do is lift up and drop out. Yet it also seems to have no room at all for lifting up as I just tried that. Rather than breaking a mount I thought I'd better ask first. In the meantime I do the timing belt/water pump change out on another car.

The slots the tabs fit in are tanged so that you have to slightly pull them out to release the shroud tab. Easy to crack/break with age. Just the top two I'm thinking, those two hold the lowers in place. I unsnap the tops from top of car while lifting up slightly, move the top out of slots but bottom stays in and then go to bottom of car to remove the assembly.

Very weird.

I wasn't able to get to the pcv hose right away. The car sat for two weeks while I used another car. At the time it had just thrown a code for a misfire. Cleared that and let it sit. Come back to it after two weeks and the 9 month old battery is dead. Charge it back and put in to figure out what happened. Yep, it is winter and my electrical gremlins are back on the dash. Must have drained since it sat rather than driven daily.

Using the car this past week it had the slightly rough idle and you could see the tach needle waver a bit up and down. Tuesday the car threw a code but I didn't get time to hook it up. Didn't drive Wednesday but today and nothing different. Slightly rough, twitchy tach needle and a hiccup when hitting the throttle too fast.

So what happens tonight. Start the car and notice the check engine light is off. The car warms up and the idle is steady. The tach is steady. The hiccup on acceleration is gone. WTH? OK, decide let's run with it for the moment but I'll still change out the 14 year old hose. Did notice vacuum hoses on top that are starting to show cracks. Two will need to have the intake off. One on top was replaced and it improved the idle a bit some days ago until tonight when all went normal. Looks like at least four more to replace just to be proactive.
