I've got one bad one, I think the right front. I was hearing it some one day and then my abs went out. This was at approximately 40K miles. My family owns three focuses, all ZX3s and my one my SVT. The first was a 2001, belongs to my bro now at 150K, and has had wheel bearing failures 3 separate times. My mom owns an 05 that has had 1 and the car has 130K on it. A bit of good news I like to spit at the Ford naysayers: none of the cars have had any other significant problems at all. Nothing. Anybody else had multiple wheel bearing problems? I realize there was a recall notice about it a long time ago.

PROGRAM TERMS:
This program will be in effect until December 31, 2003, regardless of mileage.

REASON FOR THIS SUPPLEMENT:

Customer Satisfaction Program 01B85 is being expanded to include non-rust belt regions not covered by previous communications. Additionally, this supplement will revise the expiration date for vehicles included in the original program that have not yet had this field service action performed.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

Certain 2000 and 2001 model year Focus vehicles built at the Wayne Assembly Plant from July 19, 1999 through February 20, 2001 and the Hermosillo Assembly Plant from October 4, 1999 through June 18, 2001.

CUSTOMER LETTER COMBINED WITH 02S41 or 02S42

Please Note: For customer convenience, we will be sending affected owners a combined owner letter which, depending on application, build date, and assembly plant, may include various combinations of 01B85, 02S41 or 02S42. The owner letter sample included with this document, however, reflects only program 01B85. PLEASE CONSULT OASIS TO BE SURE YOU ARE ADMINISTERING THE CORRECT PROGRAM(S).

REASON FOR THIS PROGRAM (01B85)

The rear wheel bearing seal race on the affected vehicles may experience surface corrosion. If this condition occurs, the wheel bearing seals may become damaged and allow contamination to enter the wheel bearings. As a result, the wheel bearings may prematurely wear and cause a noticeable noise. If not repaired, this condition could progress to the point where the wheel begins to wobble.

SERVICE ACTION

Drum Brakes*: On these affected vehicles, the dealer will install a drum bearing kit. This kit contains the latest level wheel bearings and seals for both rear wheels. The kit also includes a new supplemental seal, which is to be installed (on both sides) in conjunction with the wheel bearing seal.

Disc Brakes*: On these affected vehicles, the dealer will install a disc brake bearing kit. This kit contains a new spindle and seal assembly, and new wheel bearings and seals for both rear wheels.

*Vehicles with Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS), each wheel bearing kit includes new tone rings.

COMPLETION OF THIS PROGRAM (01B85) WILL CLOSE OUT SAFETY RECALL 00S31

In September 2000, a certain population of 2000 model year Focus vehicles was involved in Safety Recall 00S31, which directed the installation of a wheel retention cap and bolt on the left-hand rear spindle.

Therefore, vehicles may arrive at your dealership with one of the two following scenarios:

Vehicles with Safety Recall 00S31 performed - Remove and discard the wheel retention cap and bolt. These parts are not required, once 01B85 is performed.
Vehicles with Safety Recall 00S31 OPEN - The components replaced in Customer Satisfaction Program 01B85 eliminate the need to perform Safety Recall 00S31. Advise the customer of this fact and close out 00S31 per the instructions below.
CLOSING OUT 00S31

It is important to close Safety Recall 00S31 (if shown open in OASIS). This will prevent unnecessary Safety Recall reminders from being sent to owners. For claiming procedures refer to Attachment I, page 1 of 1.
