engine side of engine mount broke. What to do?

Hello

I have a 2003 Ford Focus 2.3l Duratec PZEV.

Today the Upper Engine mount broke. The part that broke is the engine side where the mount bolts onto the motor.

This looks as if it is part of the engine block and in order to fix I'll need to replace the head. Can anyone confirm this? Or will it unbolt and allow for replacement.

I've been considering a new engine. Is It about time????

What is wrong with the current engine that would make you want to replace it? Other than the engine mount issue? The 2.3 is a good engine!

This is the mount and hardware, the posts are a part of the engine block, I believe.

The bolts and nuts should be a part of the engine block, as illustrated here:

If those are broken off... They may be able to be welded back on?

I picked this car up from a friend who I had co-signed a loan for and he couldn't make the payments. He's not good with maintenance and never did any oil changes. She has blowby, gas mixed with the oil and a few other issues.

I just went out and jacked the engine up and took a close look. The bolt on one side snapped off and the other side is busted. (the hole where the bolt goes split in two parts.) She's aluminum, can that be welded?

I'll have to call around tomorrow and look for a price on a motor, If I can find one for 300 or 400 maybe I'll but that in. Otherwise I'll likely scrap her and pick up something else.

Here's your best bet for finding a cheap engine: http://car-part.com/

Its where I got mine when I had my engine go to crap. I found an engine with 1,024 miles on it for 850. Blowby is no fun. I was getting oil past the rings somehow on my old engine, so I know the pain.

Also, just something to be aware of, if you go from a PZEV to non PZEV engine, the alternators are different, and I think the serpentine belts are too. Not sure about the belt, but positive about the alternator lol.

Are you referring to those posts that are circled in the picture? Those posts can be removed actually. If you had snapped one off, you will need to remove what is left of that post. Not sure if Ford will carry a direct replacement for it but you can always call Village Ford which is one of our vendors for that part. You may have to buy them as a pair but it's definitely a lot better than having to replace the block lol. If Village Ford doesn't carry that part, you can remove the other post, go to an auto parts store and see if they carry something similar in size. Also those posts are held in with a loc-tite, so just take your time removing them so you don't break off the other one.

Yes and no. I have the posts. Of course, one is now shorter than the other because it snapped into two pieces. The threaded insert for the one post split in two; the other threaded insert is filled with the remainder of the broken bolt.

Because this engine has other issues and I'm not really a Ford guy I'm gonna junk this car and hopefully buy a Buick.

Thanks for your help and timely response.

Good Day!

Even if the aluminum tab is broken off, or cracked, it is repairable.
If it's just cracked, a welder should be able to heli-arc it while in the car with only minor removal of parts in the way.

The welder I take stuff to routinely welds up the holes in the sides of Al blocks when a con rod blows a hole through the side of a drag motor.

I broke off one of the mounting tabs on the aluminum bellhousing of the transmission in my chevelle back in 1992, on a Sunday afternoon, and I needed it back together for the next morning. Found a welder local, cost $25 because I took it to him, got it all put back together that day, and I am still running that transmission today.
