WHy doesnt anyone just change the pressure plate and friction plate and use the factory dual mass flywheel. WHy am I Looking at 400-500$ for a clutch kit... do I really need a new dual mass flywheel? It sounds so silly to replace the flywheel if it doesn't need to be turned/resurfaced. I am not familiar with dual mass flywheels at all so this leads me to ask- is there anything that wears out on the dual mass flywheel that would explain why everyone either gets a new dual mass flywheel with their clutches kits(400-600$) or they upgrade to classic style clutches with new flywheels which is around 800-900$.

Dual mass flywheels do have a limited lifespan. When you replace the clutch you can certainly go with a clutch kit that has a conventional flywheel. DMF (dual mass flywheel) serves to "smooth out" rev differences a little bit. They have a spring or springs that take up some slack when you don't nicely rev-match a shift. So when/if you go with an aftermarket kit that doesn't have the DMF, you'll probably learn to be a little more careful with your shifts. There's a little more to it than what I briefly explained, but that's the brief version.

I think that the aftermarket kits tend to work out just fine for folks. I haven't really heard complaints about losing the DMF.

And to answer your question maybe a little better, people don't resurface a DMF because it would also require an internal rebuild (the spring), and as far as I know it's really not made to be resurfaced, just replaced. So you either buy a new DMF or just ditch it for a conventional non-DMF flywheel.

The purpose of a dual mass flywheel is to dampen vibrations in the engine from being transmitted to the rest of the drivetrain. It's all part of the effort of manufacturers to make cars smooth and quiet.

You can replace it with a single mass flywheel if you are willing to accept more vibration in the drive train.

We offer the luk factory replacement and the performance clutch and flywheel.

Dgc333 makes a good point as it is true with a one piece solid flywheel you will notice more drivetrain vibrations. I know with the aluminum flywheel it might sound like a bad slave cylinder. There is a chatter noise notice mainly at idle and while decelerating in gear. The steel flywheels tend to have less noise than the aluminum.

We have many different options available. You can call us or chat with us online if you have any questions. Thank you. http://www.c-f-m.com/performancepar.../pc/showsearchresults.asp?pageStyle=H&resultCnt=40&keyword=focus+svt+clutch+kit
