Alright, this one isdirected at the physics and duratec gurus that know more then myself. I have decided that i am going to have a shop fabricate an exhaust for me. There r a couple in the area that do do the mandrel bends. I figuare that this will probably be the cheapest method to get a great sounding exhaust with a few extra ponies. Anyways most of the shops have been asking me is if i am willing to get a high flow cat put on the car. Now how much hp do you think that will be added for that, and more importantly will it still remain street legal? I am going to have it done in the next couple weeks

The fact that your car is a PZEV will make it a very gray area... as far as being street legal.

I thought the general rule, was you can't touch a catalyitic convertor. Even if it get's damaged I thought you had to get the same exact one from the dealer?

I'm only saying this because PZEV's carry the 100,000 Mile warranty for the stock air filter, along with the exhaust.

Just remove the cat and have them fabricate a flange welded to straight pipe to connect to the flex-pipe flange.

I'm pretty sure touching the cat is a no-no, being emissions equipment and all, so even high-flow is still considered tampering.

I'd either have them make a catback mandrel or just go straight flex-back, I'm not sure that's any more illegal than making a highflowcat-back.

As for the HP, as far as stock cat vs. highflow, I would venture to guess you're not freeing up a whole lot of power there. I'm not entirely sure how much you get going from a cat to nothing but pipe, but I doubt the cat segment is a highly restrictive factor. To an extent I'm sure, but worth being emissions-illegal, perhaps not?

Maybe see if they can make you a flex-back (if gains seem worth it) and have there be a bolt-on section where you could throw the stock cat back on if necessary?

well i would love for them to fabricate this crazy setuo but i have found places that will do mandrel bends. Which is what i want, but i need to stay emissions legal and i don't want to mess with my exhaust every year for inspection.

Honestly youd probably get the most gains from a tried and true exhasut system. Im not knocking you about wanting to go custom, I just thought that you need a certain amount of back pressure that even the exhaust supplies, I wouldnt like to see a person loose pwr because something like this. But if you think it can work then go for it!! no offense ment from this.

I agree OSnap, and I'm no expert, but I was under the impression that the right shape (pretty easy), mandrel bends (he found shops to do this) and the right diameter (2.25 or 2.5") are the factors going into the correct backpressures and all those things.

If he was talking crush-bent straight pipes it'd be a different story, but from what he's mentioned I would imagine that kind of setup could serve its purpose... it'd basically be like a Trubendz from what I understand.

Oh yea, I rock the trubendz, It was the first mod I actually felt an increase in HP. But i was kinda just throwing my two cents in incase he didnt know but like you says, they have a decent grasp of whats up.

oh i know my shit as far as these cars are concerned but i am under the impression that these systems that these big name companies produce is about the same quality that i will find at one of these custom shops. Plus if i ever have any problems with my system these shops will make sure the exhaust gets fixed. To me, a warrenty plus getting almost the same quality for less is a great deal in my books

It definitely does seem like a good call... I couldn't find any good shops around here that I felt like going to, so I went with a name and I love it.

But there's definitely something to be said for having the architects of your system right there in real-time if anything comes up.

Let us know how it turns out when you get it done... how much $ are you looking at for them to fab one for ya.

Keep lookin, although thats not a bad price I got my magnaflow system with 4" tip custom mandrel bends for $260.
It sounded great wit the intake, now its a bit raspy but still not total rice. By the way what mufller have you decided on?

260 is a great price. I have the magnaflow muffler w/ my trubendz exhaust, its definatly not the loudest ive heard, but not the quietest. just to give you an idea incase your thinking of goin the magnaflow route
