Would it be possible to put a 5 spd trans from a regular focus in a svt?

And if so what clutch and flywheel would need to used?

I cant think of a single good reason to get rid of the 6 speed, but like all car mods I'm sure the final answer will depend on how much you want to spend.

It would if someone wanted their car for drag racing instead of autocrossing. The SVT was almost built for autocrossing, with the handling and tall 1st gear. Acceleration should be quicker if we all had 5 speeds instead.

A search should come up with some discussions on this subject. I remember this being discussed a couple years ago.

you can, it would be alot, and he may want to do it cause he could put wayy tooooo much power out for the getrag and the mtx may hold it!!!

I blew the diff in the 6 speed so was trying to see if it would be cheaper just to replace it with a used 5 speed. I was about to put the car up for sale so of course something has to go wrong with it.

I dont think a 5-speed swapped SVT would be very desireable if youre just looking to sell it. Kind of like the SVTs that have been hit and have base focus fronts: itll raise an eyebrow or two and turn away potential buyers

I know a 5-speed swap is possible, as the reverse has been done but I cant see why except for an all out drag build. Even then it doesnt make too much sense

so why not just replace the diff with a LSD, im guessing you tried to get the stock diff, but im sure you know ford basically tells you, you have to buy a whole new tranny.

[vommit] Putting a 5 speed in the SVT would be like putting 60lbs on a stripper. Just not right but to each his own some people like[hah] fat strippers LOL.

ive seen it done. easy swap. but agree with just getting a new diff.

although, 1/4 mile times may be faster with the 5sp.

i cant remember the person here who did it. im thinkin it was v6focus. not sure though.

well i also thought about doing the swap in my circle trak car.just so i could put the new 406 gears in it.i only run second gear and that would give me a little more gear before the turn.

The 6 spd is for novelty. The gearing is a joke. 3k rpms at 65?? WTF?? and 3rd and 4th are almost the same gearing. idk what the 5 speed is like but the 5 spd i have in my old escort was way better gearing. I dont see myself loosing any sleep over loosing the 6 spd. I know its a BMW trans so idk if its fords fault. But the 6 spd I had in my fiero was so much better. It was from a G6. GM has a way better 6 spd trans

While the gearing leaves something to be desired for everyday driving, the close ratios are a lot of fun.

As for the swap, I'm sure it's not that difficult. A could see a lot of random part buying to get it to work. It may be cheaper for the trans up front (used), but you would undoubtedly end up spending more in the end than it is worth...plus you'd end up with a much less desirable SVT (as far as resale).

What about an automatic..... lol since were talking about changing trans

soo...... hah I was actually wondering about a similar thing, yet when the swap to svt goes in, I wasn't sure if I really wanted an MTX or Getrag..... so I'm assuming that besides the extra gear, the two are pretty much similar with totally different ratios?

in other words though: well let's put it this way, it's just for every day driving, and the svt will be f/i via turbo...... which is best, 5spd or 6spd?

I posted something on this way back, I wanted to do it cuz in my area there is no AutoX just a 1/4 track? So i basically just drag race my car.

I was told its possible but something re-calribrating has to be done to the ECU? Not sure if thats tru, cuz i never followed through with it..

wow I cant believe someone is knocking the 6-spd in the SVT; it is not a novelty piece; I'm not sure if you are aware of this but the SVT was not designed as an economy car, it was designed with a CLOSE RATIO 6-spd transmission so when you are shifting up while accelerating you can stay in a closer power range instead of sloshing your way up in a 5spd relying on torque for acceleration instead of hp, which lets face it, NO NA 4cyl has, ever notice the huge gap from 2-3-4 in a 5spd? are the ratios a little undesireable in a city or on highway? well yeah, but if you wanted a highway cruising fuel sipping economy car you shouldnt have gotten an SVT, and if you wanted a pure city car, you should have gotten an automatic; while on the highway this car will keep up with, or outrun, cars with much more power than it because of its gearing, were it geared with a longer 6th gear, the lack of torque would make 6th gear useless, unless you live where it is completely flat, or a continuous downhill; back to the question about a 5spd; yeah you can swap one in, it is not cheaper and the only reason to swap is because it can handle more torque than the getrag, several have done it, look at focuspower.com im sure they can get you some info.
One last comment on the SVT - the more performance oriented you make a car, the less liveable it is as a daily driver, the less practical it becomes, and the quicker it burns fuel.

I know its not an economy car but dropping 500 rpms when im upshifting??!! WTF!! I get better gas milage with my supra. At 80 mph I got 29 mpg. And its not stock at all. With a completely stock svtf i get 24 tops. I am sorry but the 6 spd is just a selling point. Not a great trans. Yea. Its slow super slow but its not fast by any means unless its your first car. It does handle well but Im not in love with it by any means.

If you want better gas milage, go to the Mini forums. Those guys love the SVT gearing for auto-x use. I'm sure you can find someone willing to swap there gears for your gears. I'm not busting your balls, there reallly are guys with Minis that are willing to swap. Just know you will be slower than you are now.

#29 ·
shit if i had a supra, i wouldnt have an SVT thats for sure, and if your getting better mileage with the supra with more power.... see where this is going....

#30 ·
way better gas milage and the supra has traction problems in anything but dry weather. rain makes for a very interesting drive. and letting it warm up completely before driving and people tryin to talk to me while im driving gets annoying as hell. I drive it sometimes but it sits most of the time because I have limited miles insurance so I can afford it. I can get anything from 4mpg to 29mpg depending on how I drive. But anyways. They could have made 6th an economy gear. Just like gm does with 6th in the G6. They gears are way to close. To much time spent shifting. and nobody would keep it in 6th to pass a car. A downshift needs to be done. even just for the fun of it.

I've made more passes than I can count while in sixth gear....there is no need to downshift if you are on the highway. Push the right pedal a bit more and you'll be passing in no time. I actually REALLY like the SVT gearing. It's very non-traditional American...which I like...
