Maybe this is an old topic, but does anybody know anything about the 2.5L i4 Duratec? it looks like it would be an easy swap for the 2.0...

wiki says"

"The Duratec 25, or Duratec 2.5L I-4, is an evolution of the Duratec 23. 'Duratec 25' should not be confused with the similarly named 2.5L V6 Ford Duratec. The new Duratec 25 is an inline 4-cylinder engine design that is identical to the Mazda MZR 2.5L engine. The bore and stroke have increased over the 2.3L to 89 mm x 100mm and as such now displaces 2488 cc | 151ci. Power has been increased to 171 hp@6000 rpm and 171 lb-ft@4500 rpm torque. "

I believe the 2.5 comes standard with VCT. Which means you will have to get an ECU to go with the engine. And since it isn't in a Focus, that will make the swap even harder.

Not saying impossible, but its not a plug-and-play engine.

Is the longblock physically the same dimensions and a direct bolt up?

If one were starting from scratch to build a performance replacement motor for a 2.3 duratech focus, the 2.5 would be a drop-in but not a plug-n-play?

Disable or eliminate the VCT, swap all external accessories, and what else so it would work?

If a guy were planning on building a new shortblock for heavy nitrous use, starting with a 2.5 core looks to be an equal cost propositon as a 2.3

if a guy were building anything for anything, the 2.5 looks to be the best choice unless he has a 2.3 just laying around. cant wait to see the first 2.5 swapped car

From my quick research it seems so. Same overall engine package but bigger bore block with a longer stroke factory crank, that's steel not cast.

If you are doing a complete junkyard replacement motor, or had planned on buying a good crank kit for a 2.3, starting with a 2.5 core seems to be the better way to go.

I asked mnths back about asking my 2.3 from the 88mm to a 89. Was told not a good idea. But really? Could I?

Also seen a 25. turbo Fusion at Carlisle Pa Ford Event. 290hp with only 7lbs boost.. I would like to try a 2.5 in my focus or build the 2.3 up more.

NICE.. Hope it works out for you Tom. Then that means FUN for US..

I finally got my 2.3 after trying to for 4 mnths NOW.. I see at Carlisle that the 2.5 is SWEET to have.. My luck. LOL

Hi guys,

I had put duratec 2.5 l4 into my focus MKII 2006 (1.8 liter with IB5 MT gearbox). Engine originally from Mazda 6 with VVT, engine code: L5, but 4 cylinders in line.
Detailed change are as following:
1. remove VCT, and welding to stop the oil plug
2. change fuel injecter from 1.8(4 holes) to 2.5 (12 holes)
3. change airintake manifold
3. change air throttle controal from 1.8 to 2.5 (original from Ford Fusion 2.5 l4 2009)
4. carryover 1.8 damper pulley
5. change damper pulley belt
6. remove the balance shaft (considering to fix it again, but need to modify the oil pan)
7. carryover 1.8 cylinder head cover
8. rewrite 2.5 turning to replace original 1.8

Most components remain in OEM condition.

I am not sure, 2.5 balance shaft is same as 2.3. Really, somebody says they are the same.
Just remove the balance shaft, not to stop the plug, that is why, I can put it back. Because, when my car (with 2.5 engine) running 120 km/h, rpm is 3500, you can feel the viberation. I think it would be health that engine with balance shaft to reduce the viberation.

Hey guys,

I'm sorta new to the Duratec boards. I recently inherited a '99 Cougar with a Zetec and (unfortunately) an automatic. Being a mustang guy, I want a bigger engine that has more potential (than the I4) to go fast, and that's where my series of questions begins, so here goes:

  • What would be involved in making a swap from a Zetec to a Duratec?
  • Would it be more practical to just buy a Duratec Cougar? (thinking about buying a rear-ended junker as a donor)
  • I saw some Duratec engines on sale on ebay for only $600+. Seems unusually cheap, is that the normal going price or is something wrong with them?
  • Does FoMoCo sell crate vehicle treat Duratec engines (particularly the SVT Contour block) like they do with the Mustang 4.6L?
  • I've been trying to find out who moulded the Cougar S concept car's body kit, anyone know if it's sold on the market? (the sweetest body I've ever seen on a Cougar)
  • I know Paxton and Vortech make centrifugal superchargers for the Duratec, is there a twin-screw supercharger on the market as well?
