Hey Guys,
I'm about fed up with this job! I can see the finish line but it keeps moving backwards as I try to run forwards.
Clutch started to slip early to mid october and school had me tied up so I parked the car until I could sort things out over christmas break. I did this because in addition to a lack of time I discovered several other things to change out while I had it apart (tie rod, ball joint, thermostat housing, ground wires, and so on....). On top of all of this, it was my first clutch so I wanted plenty of time to mess up.
The main job was to install the Luk OEM Clutch kit I got from RockAuto. This included a brand new dual mass flywheel, friction disc, pressure plate, and slave cylinder. I also made sure to use brand new Motorcraft flywheel bolts as well.
I was able to wrestle it all apart, work through my other aforementioned issues, and get it all back together. I bled the brakes easily and they are holding pressure excellently. The clutch on the other hand is giving me issues. I have looked through all the threads in existence and tried all of the methods in existence to bleed the clutch with no luck.
So here's what I do know, I'm hoping you guys can help me troubleshoot this.
-Slave cylinder is brand new. I had no issues installing it.
-I think my clutch failed because the seal on slave cylinder failed and allowed trans fluid to get on friction disc. This is evidenced by the scary low fluid level when I drained trans and also the folded seal I found when I removed the existing slave cylinder.
-I forgot to check that I installed the friction disc in the proper orientation. I don't think I did, bc I saw in a thread that I wouldn't have been able to bolt the pressure plate on if it was backwards. Also, don't think this would affect my issue at hand.
- I replaced clutch master cylinder with Motorcraft unit maybe 2 years/10k miles ago because I would lose pressure while driving. Once replaced, haven't had a problem since.
- Brakes bled easily and are holding pressure well.
- If I remove the clutch line from the slave cylinder, and press the pedal to the floor, I get fluid coming out the end of the line. This tells me that the MC is primed and fluid is getting TO the slave cylinder. I guess that would mean the issue is with the slave cylinder.
- when I have the system hooked up like I would normally bleed the clutch line, I only see a small amount of fluid come down the line and seemingly no air.
- I tried disconnecting the clutch line, putting a syringe where the clutch line goes, and holding a reservoir of fluid with a line to the bleeder. Crack bleeder, and pull vacuum with syringe from clutch line side. I saw tons of fluid go from reservoir into slave and finally into the syringe. This tells me I have fluid in the slave, although it was filled backwards.
-clutch pedal is definitely connected to the MC.
Ponderings:
-is it possible the bleeder valve is improperly sized and is thus affecting how I can bleed the slave? It feels awfully loose no matter how little I loosen it.
-is there any chance I installed it wrong?
-bad part?
-am I missing something in the bleeding process?
-Do I need to just keep going?
-Is the clutch line itself bad?
I'm totally stumped. I've been without a car now since October and I'm almost there, but there's this big roadblock and I'm going to need a boost to get over it! ANY insight is greatly appreciated.
