Depends on where you are; Canada will pull you over, fine you, and take your detector away. In Virginia they're not legal either. I think there's at least one more state where they're not legal. Other than that, they can't pull you over just because of a detector. That doesn't mean they can't use some other excuse.

^^ ditto. It also depends on the law of the state that your vehicle is registered in. It also depends if that states fines and point are recognized by the state where your license is issued. Such as if you get pulled over in Virginia for it, but your car is registered in a state where its legal the cop might still give you a ticket and confiscate it, but it won't hold in court. Since its legal in the state you're from. (which means they should not have given you the ticket to begin with, but if they are having a bad day.... so will you.) I think that Virginia also issues points when they catch you with a detector, I will try to find the statue.

(your insurance will still see it though.)

One more small point. If they pull you over and see you have a radar detector its almost an instant ticket (like if your going 5 over, no warning just a ticket). Kind of like getting back at you for having one. I even heard a cop say this.

^^ ditto i have a trooper freind who says the same thing. He says, if they have a detector they make a habit of speeding... so i'll get them for whatever i can.

i had a cop tell me one time "oh you think your gonna hide from me do you!"

he then proceded to have me show him that all my equipment was in functioning order

thats right i had to turn on all my turnsignals headlights and honk my horn.

i was laughing my ass off the whole time.

i would have gotton out of the car and.... [nutkick] and speed off!!! [burnout] [driving]

That is one big reason why I don't have one of those things. It just makes you want to speed all the time, and speeding is stupid in my opinion. What I do is keep my speed within 10 mph over on the interstate, and within 5 mph on all other roads. I have a perfect record, and I plan on keeping it. I have never even been pulled over. I feel that if you want to go fast, take your car to the track. Just my 2 cents.

Virginia and D.C. also bans the use of radar detectors. I always see a sign when I cross into Virginia and D.C. that says radar detectors are illegal.

Kinda hard to get a ticket when you are following a John Deere down the road there in Missouri.
Oh wait, that was me driving the tractor as a kid in the Ozarks. [:D]

Out here in CA, if you drive the speed limit, you'll actually cause accidents.
Yeah, 10 mph over is about right.

Cops have a job to do, and having a radar detector just makes their job that much easier to determine you are the one to pay into the state revenue.

Yeah man...dependng on what state your in. Also, even if you don't have it up and get pulled over, if its in plane view (like if you had it up and took it down) you'll also get the ticket. Its a bad way to go down but don't even have it in sight if its illegal in your state.

hehe, the way i figure it for every ticket i dont get out of that repays the 4 street signs i stole. or the park that i drove thru. or the fountian i sudzed. or the fireworks i blew up and the firedepartment had to come out

so yes i agree, get a radar detector, make it easy for the police to justify charging you for the fun you have had. We all play our part in a community. you also pay for most of mine. sorry.

Maybe in Ontario but they're legal in most of Canada, I sell them everyday and you'd be surprised how many cops have them for their own vehicles.

Just drive as fast as the traffic... I can think of better uses for the money I'd spend on a speeding ticket. I'd rather have a new chip on the car.

And I'll repeat what some have said, I talked to a trooper that said he makes it a point to just write a ticket to anyone with a radar that was speeding at all, no chance for a warning.

So YOU'RE the one who's been doing all that stuff. You bad, bad little boy. I have to pay taxes for those repairs, and you're giving all young men a bad reputation. (Note: I don't pay taxes, I'm only 16, and also, thats all you've done? 4 street signs, a fountain, a park , and fireworks, pfffff, ain't nothin.[;)])

dude just get one of the integrated radar detectors that u cant see from the outside......
then they won't know u have one! duh....plus they are better since cops point at your license plate and headlights normally...

^^ nice point.

I have seen one of those, with a little LED display that you can put infront of the odo console. The sensors get installed where ever you want, I think they come with 2.
I never really looked that far into them the moment I read, "drill hole for sensor".... the word "drill" did it for me.
