not yet, I've been undecided and may hold off. I'm not a big fan of a mod that's not reversible, plus I like the smoothness of my car. Call me an old man lol, but I don't want any added vibes

That's fine, just got a chuckle out of beating him to it (grin).

Reversible, but not as easy as pulling it to begin with since you have to "time" the gears right when reassembling.

Duratec 2.3 and the current ST engines have a balance shaft assembly in the oil pan area, driven off a crankshaft gear.

Ford's recently gone to an aluminum housing for it, previously it was cast iron and the whole thing weighed in at about 20 lbs..

Removing it is fairly easy, 4 bolts plus screwing in an adapter to block the oil passage to it. Saves a bit of rotating mass, adds about a quart of oil capacity, and removes that weight from the front of the car when deleted.

No big gains, you can feel the engine rev a bit quicker in neutral and there's a slight increase in vibration - feel the engine run vs. so smooth you can't tell it's on.

I'm not promoting it, smooth can be quite nice and the gains aren't appreciable.

Extra quart of oil capacity and knocking of 20 lbs. do more than the quicker revving you only notice if rev matching. All are more theoretical than practical for noticeable value.

IMHO the difference comes in the condition of your motor mount for the vibes, did it long ago and finally the last couple years my pass. mount is starting to wear out with the typical vibes when starting in cold weather. Still OK when it warms up, so no urgency to do anything.

Got the kit as a prize at FF '11, before they had a pan for the sump avail. as well. Doing the "free' mod. was worth trying at the time, something cheap that didn't affect getting it inspected etc.. Feeling the small difference was a 'plus' that I'd done something for engine mods.. Suspension/wheels/tires were the improvements that made the large differences.

Wasnt the bsd something that porsche owners had to do at one point, to keep their motors from grenading? I remember reading something like that a while back...

Rough memory of the details for that was an "idler shaft" (bearing problem?) that's part of the cam chain system. I think the usual interference engine issues applied beyond damage from tossing the chain.

Boxster and maybe Cayman engines were involved, and I think it was NOT under warranty because it was a higher mileage problem. Something you'd want to see records for if buying one.

Don't know if that shaft had any balance shaft function off hand.

Yea, sounds right... Just remember reading one of Torchinsky's "buy these cars for cheap" type articles where it was mentioned...

Expensive Sheet can have known issues too, used BMW's with the V8 are a bargain for the major expense of redoing cam chain/tensioners/"VANOS" cam adjusters.
