Hi to everyone . . . is there anyone willing to help make sense of all the info out there?

I just bought an '05 focus. It was an SES model, so it has the stereo with the 6-CD in-dash changer, etc, etc. I previously had a '94 grand am with an aftermarket HU. The grand am sounded very nice, by my standards :) (don't laugh) . . . no amps, no subs, no nothing (besides the new HU). Now . . . the speakers in the focus aren't terrible for what I need them for, but I'd like to get a little more bass. I'm not talking about waking the neighbors down the street . . . just something to reach the lower frequencies that I had in the grand am, but the factory speakers are not quite giving me.

I don't have much money to play with here. Nobody will hire me for the summer. Also, I really like the audio controls on the steering wheel, which makes me hesitant to get a new HU. Do you think new speakers will do the trick? I have looked at a few online, and have browsed around some of the forums . . . I don't know what to make of all the jumble. And do I need to worry about the power output of the factory HU in relation to any new speakers? I don't know what that output is. I'm sure all of you know more about all this than will ever be useful to me. If there's any help you're willing to give me (a poor little novice) that would be great.

I just want my Luda to sound like he should . . . you know?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much in advance . . . I just don't know anything about all this. Hope to hear from you soon.

the stock speakers are designed to work with the large volume door cavities on low amounts of power from the headunit. they are really only focused on the lower frequencies. if you get aftermarket speakers, you'll get a big improvement in the higher frequencies but the lower frequency notes will sounds the same, if not weaker. this is simply because most aftermarket speakers are designed for clarity at all frequencies. to get more bass output from them, more power would be needed.

getting a new headunti is prboably your best bet for getting mroe out of the stock speakers. you usualy have an internal eq that should help a lot too. however, if you want to use the stock steering wheel controls, you need to purchase a special device that would run $60+; it's a PAC product by the way. there should be more information on it in the FAQ.

Hmmmm . . . so, I'm not going to get any more bass from new speakers . . . I would need to get a new head unit . . . and then eventually new speakers? So, for what I'm looking for, you suggest going for the HU? If so, what would you recommend?

OK, you're also going to have to excuse my inexperience here. I can't find the steering wheel controls in the FAQ . . . maybe I'm looking for the wrong thing . . . and a PAC product would be? Sorry, guys . . . I just need some guidance . . . thanks for your help.

When I replaced my stock head unit in my '00 with a fairly expensive alpine head unit, the stock speakers played louder, deeper, and clearer at all levels. I was actually decently surprised. They lasted 3 days, though, as I got tired of them and dropped some boston acoustics in there :)

Thanks, boys. I'll see where this leads me . . . although, one person I talked to suggested a bazooka tube . . . I looked it up. I guess there are a few kinds. There's even one that powers the rest of the speakers in the car . . . has anyone heard of or know anything about these things? Thanks again for any input. Scott, thanks for the links!

You get a bazooka tube and imma slap you sensless. Thats the biggest waste of money.

You pay 100-200 bucks for a tube that has barely more base output than a set of 6x9's.

Oh, I don't want to be slapped senseless!!! The only thing is . . . I don't want a LOT more bass . . . just a little. I went somewhere today to ask another person what he thought. He's like, "let's try this in your trunk . . . just pull around and we'll stick it in there." OK, well, it was a little much. Not to mention, I couldn't actually hear the rest of the music that was supposed to be there. :D It's all just one big heap of confusion for me. I kind of need my trunk, too. I haul international students too and from the airport all the time - you know, the ones with the monster suitcases? I just don't know what to make of everything at the moment. (sigh)
