a car is one of the worst acoustic soundstages that you'll ever run into.
A car environment is definitely a tough place to have a decent sounding system, but it can be done.
This was my intention when researching and building my system. I was going to build a crazy 8ch active setup, but managed to get really close with my current setup for less than half the money.
A car will never sound as good as a really good home system, but my car sounds better than the average home system. It actually rivals accuracy and tonality of some higher-end home systems.
Granted, if you are sitting in the car with it off. [

But it is still really nice even when driving with the exterior noise factor.
The factory 'audiophile' stereo is not really an audiophile system. It's simply a marketing approach to help make a sale.
The Focus is actually a pretty good design for a good soundstage with the right equipment and install. I must say, it is way better for the driver than it is for the passenger. It has something to do with the raised curved instrument panel.
Most of my music plays above the dash, and there is a central voice or solo instrument. You can hear a breath, fingers plucking strings, etc.
The Audiophile system is good for $450, but for $1500 or so, you can have a great system that actually surprises an audiophile who takes into consideration the car environment.
Some people like to go boom, some like to hear the detailed sound quality. I prefer a detailed sound quality system that can provide a little extra kick when desired. [
