My best GUESS is the engine was run low on oil to begin with. Engine ran hot, the variable valve timing system, which needs oil pressure to operate, was not getting the oil so the valve timing was off (I believe the variable cam timing, intake and exhaust can vary 30 degrees on this engine) and made contact with piston. [strongman]
IMO, this guess could explain the tapping and bent valves. It would not explain a "burned" piston though, if that was truly the case.

I don't believe your case is related to the OP's burned piston. A broken piston skirt causing oil control ring leakage is nothing like a piston with a hole burned through it, and far less catastrophic.
I told my expierience because the person I quoted seemed sceptical about an engine burning so much oil. They never showed me my broken piston and I was told different things by different people with no conclusive explanation for cause

See below (bold emphasis added by me):

My engine was replaced at 22766km or regular not very agressive driving for a hole melted threw one of the pistons. I started noticing oil loss at 12000km so it happened before then. Not sure exactly when because I didn't check oil after initial delivery until then.
OK, I understand that you don't truly know what happened. But, you are willing to state in one place that the bottom of the piston was broken, and yet in another you tell us a hole was melted through your piston. Were you not trying to relate your case to the OP's when you stated that a hole was burned through your piston?

Your right Tom never check your oil. There is in no way any benifiet to doing so, it certainly wouldn't show potential internal engine problems. Everything you say is dogma [pray]
Will you please show me where is said to never check your oil or that is was not worth doing

dogma ? Factual would of been a better word

low oil wouldnt cause a burned piston but a burned piston can cause low oil

The 2012up Focus runs lean , add mods and in most cases it gets leaner , this is what burns the pistons

Tom

I thought that is what PCM's and O2 sensors were for to maintain a 14.7:1 fuel ratio darn how lean is my 2012 when I add the 2013 ST turbo but with lower boost due to 12:1 compression I don't see aftermarket CAI or exhaust leaning a motor enough to burn a piston. For the concern about engine ticking think of how this engine is designed and works now how a modern diesel works this is just a low compression diesel with spark plugs and gives great mileage so I can live with tick, tick, tick.... LOL

Sounds like running premium fuel would be a good idea for this engine. I think you get slight hp gains (2 hp) as well, but the oil rich premium would prevent the engine from running too lean. At least that's how I understand it.

You have to buy the whole box top and bottom around 138.xx but the ST you can buy the top and bottom separate around 25.xx each only difference I can see is the ST doesn't have the sound resonator on the bottom where you cut for the mod. And if they say anything about that being the wrong bottom not having the other piece. Well it came off your lot that way just say maybe they ran out of the other one my 2013 SE looks like the ST one no hole in the bottom I did notice it sounded better then the 2012 SE and a little more power.

If the part says Ford, I doubt they'll ever be any the wiser... That's one reason I like the FFE RMM vs. the third party offerings, or even the MS3 one. Its says FoMoCo right on it!
