I just finished up replacing the fuel pump and also put a new filter on my 2005 2.0. I have cycled the key several times(at least 20) and can hear the new pump run,and it tried to start a couple times. The way I relieved the pressure before I started was by unplugging the shut off switch, starting it and letting it run until it died. I plugged it back in after I got the work done. Is there any way to check and see if I have fuel pressure without giving myself a bath? like I said, the pump is cycling but I am not sure it is actually pumping fuel or could it be something else I need to reset? thanks for any ideas!!

You installed the filter the correct way? I know you asked in your other thread about which way it goes, but is it possible you put it in backwards? I asked for help with one of my fuel filter changes, and somehow I still managed to install it backwards.

Im not sure if you would need to reset the ECU by unplugging the battery or not, but I honestly dont know why you would need to.

I was just checking, bc thats the only thing that I can think of, unless somehow you got a line clogged. If nothing else, try unhooking the line from the end of the fuel rail, and put it into a can or safe container, then try to start the car and see if you can get any fuel into that containter.

I'm guessing it's running by now....

My guess is that running the engine dry to avoid the bath of fuel would also mean you've got a lot of fuel line to re-fill once the new pump is operational.

Since this is a "non-return" system, all the air in the system from the new pump, new filter & drained lines has to find it's way out the injectors. As a result, it'll spit & sputter for a while until the lines are purged completely. Multiple starts 'till it stays running.

Let us know how it went, or if you still have problems.

Cheers!

Well,it has rained here just about non stop since I posted yesterday, finally stopped for a few hours. I just checked the filter,it is on the right way. I did notice when I tried to start it today, the pump would cycle when I turned the key on and again when I stopped cranking the engine over. I know that's not normal, what would be causing it to do that? Also took the fuel line off running to the injectors, cycled the engine,no gas there. Pulled the main line off the tank, cycled the pump, not so much as a drop came out. What could I have screwed up so bad during the install that it won't pump at all? I put everything back together exactly like it came apart.

Is it possible to have gotten a bad pump?

That would be nice. Hope it is so you get a "simple" fix.

Well, not sure exactly what the problem was,but it runs now!! I took everything apart again, made sure the connections to the suction hose were fitted correctly, put it all back together and it fired right up. I drove it for about 20 minutes, revving it in every gear, no sputtering or stumbling. I just wonder if for some reason the pump had an air pocket and wouldn't prime itself. who knows? I am just glad it runs now and I don't have to keep driving my 10 mpg truck to work every night!!

Glad to hear it is up and running now. You may have had one of the lines loose that was creating the air pocket as you said and not letting it prime.
