Hello everyone, new guy here. I just bought a 01 focus sedan 5 speed for cheap. It was an orig sohc that dropped the valve seat and underwent the zetec swap (seems pretty common). For the most part its in there but the wiring still needs to be done. I got the car as is with little to no information. Its got the full swap from an 03 hatch. Including all the wiring, fuse block, computers, tach cluster, fuel pump controller, header and downpipe, column plus key. Problem is i have no idea where to start. They seemed to have lost interest and just gave up. I need help figuring out whats been done and what hasnt. I got a trunk with a full wiring harness and i have no idea if its the zetec or sohc harness. Ill get some pics so you guys can see what im working with

I hope you have a garage to work in!
Best thing to do-pull out everything that isn't bolted down and start photographing things. Post up the picture and any questions you have. This site is a plethora of info and a lot of people who are more than willing to help you out.
And clean clean clean!!!

Well thankfully ford puts labels on their harnesses! Everything in the trunks labeled 01. I'm thinking it'd be a good start to swap the whole 01 harness back in then add only what's needed for the engine? Also my cars an 01 and the engine is an 03. What kinda changes are needed? Its already got the 03 column and cluster I'd like to use. I got both shifters as well, they look different so I'm guessing they're specific? I know its got the zetec tranny and the linkage is hooked up but unsure which is used? I'm guessing the sohc linkage won't bolt up to the z one?

So i went out there and hooked the starter up (not mounted as i dont have the bolts yet) and the power wire to the alt. hooked up the battery to see what happens as is. The gauge cluster lights up all the gauges go all the way up then set them selves back to zero. so it seems to be hooked up? the lights all seem to work except the third brake light. its on at all times if the battery is hooked up. If i try to turn it over it does nothing. There are a few buttons and such hanging out under the column that arent hooked to anything. i also noticed theres no type of switch on the clutch pedal so maybe thats why it wont crank? im assuming there should be some sort of neutral saftey switch attached to it that im not seeing? Also the wiring going to the gas tank says 03 but the fuel pressure box says 01 on it. i have the 03 one but its not hooked up. could that be a possible problem? ill get pics of what alls not hooked up.

Do you know if the car had cruise control?
If I am not mistaken there are 4 switches under the dash right in the pedal box-two clutch switches a brake switch and a brake position switch. It won't crank unless the clutch is depressed

These are a part of the 03 harness going to the back but not hooked up?

How can i tell which tranny these are for?

Which shifter do i want?

Broken looking sensor-pretty sure it's the temp sensor.

The wires with no plugs-someone has pulled the wire from the connector. Probably to incorporate the wiring with the new Zetec plug ends. Will have to look at a wiring diagram and colors to ID. Can you post up colors of the wires?

The 6 terminal plug is for the MAF sensor.

Found on the floor is the clutch switch-mounts here...

Under dash-that plug you are holding is the OBD port.

Coming off column-left to right-clutch position switch #1, brake switch, green plug is for brake position sensor (used for cruise control cars-plug will be there for all cars).

"Should there be something here?"-that is the clutch master cylinder.

Fuel pump module driver-check the part number-I think they are the same so use either one.

Shifter on left is MTX75 (Zetec) the other is for the SPI. You want the one on the left.

This is a short shifter but you get the idea of how they are hooked up.

Hope this helps-going to drink some Apricot Wheat Ale now!

Thank you sir. Can the two wires coming off the clutch switch just be jumped? My connector looks to be missing parts. If I press the brake switch the third brake light turns off but now I'm curious why the two tail lights weren't on with the third? I know they work as they turn on with the running lights. I believe that broken sensors coming off the ac pump? Would that really be where they would put the temp sensor? How can you test the computer? I guess before they gave up they towed it to a dealer to be tested. They tried hooking up to a dealer VCM and the dealer said it wasn't powering on and it either has electrical iss
ues (duh) or pcm is fried.

Thank you sir. No matter what I've tried tho I can't get it to do anything. I can't even get it to try to turn on the starter. I'm thinking it has to be a pats issue or a bad pcm. When I turn on the key I hear the fuel pump and most of my dummy lights come on. My fuel gauge reads correctly too. I keep hearing a random clicking like a relay switching on and off and every time it clicks the door open light comes on, then it'll go away then click back on. The red one above the temp gauge. Also should I be getting any sort of read out on that display? Its always blank

Image

That could easily be one bad ground causing that. Double check wiring/fuses under hood and see if you can get the dashes on the odometer to go away.

Honestly, internet isn't going to be much help here.
You're best bet is going to be buying a good Ford wiring diagram for the car and going over every inch of what has been changed.
There's no way for any of us to know how (or if at all) cobbled together this car really is.

It's a case where you need to have someone who has the correct knowledge and tools to look it over / do the work for you.

Any suggestions what fuses or what grounds I should look for?
Check the grounds at the drivers fender near the battery and at the passenger foot well. They are the grounds for the PCM/ECU.

Rechecked grounds, all seem good. Went over as much wiring as I could see and everything appears to be hooked up. Is there a way to test the pcm to see if its good? Like a jumperwire? Doubt it. Also with the key on every ten seconds I hear a clicking coming from the fuse block in the cabin. This the fuel pump relay clicking? Why every 10 seconds?
