haha i like how ppl vote but no one wants to post lol - i'll be the first person that u guys can laff at - i was racing one of my friends lancers i was by him after first gear and then kept going all the way to the end of 3rd i was really far ahead so i was like ok i'll just shift to 4th since im already at redline. I did and it went into second cuz of the STS it moves around i heard this loud bang and the car just kept rolling and it wouldn't go into gear i thought i blew the tranny when i opened the hood i saw something glowing looked and it was the headers they were glowing bright red i looked under the car and i could still see the glow it was pretty insane.

6th to 2nd huh? i think ive done it once.....cought it before it car too far into the redline though...lol. i HAVE scratched gear a bit. worst is when you try to show off by takin off fast from somewhere and when you shift to 2nd all you hear is a grind, crunch, crunch, grind! i shift really fast so its probably just me. im pretty much out of gear and more than halfway to my next gear before i get the clutch pushed in. wish i could video tape it to see how fast i really am or if im just fillin myself up with worthless pride..lol. oh well. i have done your little mis-shift.

I plead guilty. I've only been driving the car a few weeks but my snafu is that I'll be cruising and shift from 4th to 5th, but catch 3rd instead. Luckily its always when my mind is somewhere else and I'm nowhere near redline. When my mind is on cruise my natural shift pattern is that of my old WRX. The SVT is just not the same. Ah, inattention.

Me and a buddy were messing around on a back road and i went to pass him after a stop sign... well redline third went to shift to fourth and BAM second. He said that a big ass cloud of black smoke came from my tailpipe. I had to pull over and let the clutch cool down for a minute. hehe scared the hell out of me though

Hmmm... Just a question here, you reved it to redline in third, and dropped it in second, letting the clutch out, and the car was okay? Did you figure out that you missed the shift before you completely let the clutch out? Or did you majorly over-rev it and it was still okay?

Just wondering how the whole shift missing thing usually works [:)]

From 6th to 2nd??[???:)]
I take it, you mean you're going into 6th, but hit 2nd instead?

I've had the occasional misshift from 1st to 2nd gear when AutoCrossing.
It goes into gear, hits the gate, shifter's there, let out the clutch and nothin'.[:(]
However, that phenomenon hasn't reared it's ugly head since the STS, VF, and clutch TSB.[:D]

i dont understand how you can accidentally casually shift into 3rd instead of 5th..youve gotta kinda force it in there, would feel different..no way you could miss gears by accident in the zetec, too obvious where each gear is...might just be the difference

For me, it is always the shift from fifth to sixth that winds up in fourth gear. Third to forth has bounced out of second once or twice but not nearly as common. More likely the dropping of th clutch too early going into 2nd from first when getting on it. What can I say, I'm not Parnelli Jones. At least I can drive a standard...um, sometimes. :)

I was teaching my girlfriend how to drive stick, she was doing really well but during real world driving i told her she could downshift while we were on the highway, lets just say we went from 4th to 1st, the car just kinda banged for lack of a better description but she hit the clutch right about when the rpms were soaring up to 6k(keep in mind this was like a split second from when she actually got into gear) so in that sense i was impressed because she reacted quickly and properly but oh man was that crazy. I love the girl and all but in retrospect i shoulda gotta different car, but that was on hte last clutch and 25k ago

The only time I've missed a shift is when I"m shifting fast/hard getting on it. So, the shift I'm more likely to miss is aiming for 3rd and hitting the gate on the 1st or 5th side of the slot. I've done that a couple of time, but never actually jammed it into a dramatically wrong gear. Actually, the gear I missed the most when I first got my car was reverse due to being a giant sissy about shoving the shifter ALLLLLL the way to the left. It feels like you're gonna break something [:(]

My advice:
1st -> 2nd, you can cheat the shifter by aiming down and left
2nd -> 3rd, glhf
2nd -> 4th, for me this one's really easy with the Steeda sts, just a flick straight down and it drops right in
4th -> 5th, aim up and right
5th -> 6th, aim down and right

If you have the time (i.e., everyday driving) if you are trying for 3rd or 4th, shift lightly and slowly and the shifter naturally comes to rest beneath/above those gears. Then, it's just straight up or down. [thumb]

i did 3rd to 2nd at redline in my eclipse, started letting out the clutch, and the revs went up. cought it super fast, but it scared the piss out of me. i was terrified that i skipped a tooth on the timing belt or floated some valves

Still getting used to the Reverse being on the left.... then again I have only been driving the car for a short while.

I have never gone to 2nd out of 6th, the one that gets me from time to time is a speedshift from 1st to 2nd, missing 2nd and bouncing off the rev limiter ... I hate that lol ..... I think what is happening there is that I am probably pulling the shifter to the left a bit while pulling back and getting into the reverse gate and that causes me to miss 2nd .... oh well

I've never shifted into the wrong gear like that...going for 6th and getting second or going for 5th and getting 3rd...the only problems I have had is releasing the clutch too soon. I've scrapped 2nd a time or two but as soon as I feel it I push the clutch in and let off the shifter and try again and I've done the same with 5th. I've only done that in daily driving where I get lazy and don't pull the shifter as fast as normal. Never have I missed/grinded a gear while shifting fast because I tend to shift pretty hard when I'm racing and always manage to get it there before I let out of the clutch. Finding a gear is never a problem for me though. And this is my first manual tranny car so I think I've done good so far [:)]
