Hey Folks,

Just wondering how accurate is the Foci's reading when it states "x km/miles to E". I've noticed that even though it states that I may have 5 km till empty, when I fill up there's still enough gas to travel approx. 50 km more.

Your guys' thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

There is usually a reserve amount in the tank, plus whatever is in the pump, filter and lines. You shouldn't run your tank that low regularly, the pump in the tank cools itself via the fuel, also sucking sediment into the pump/filter. A fuel gauge isn't always accurate, especially as the car ages.

I believe the warning light comes on when there's a set amount of fuel left in the tank.

As for "x miles to E", the car predicts how much distance you have left based on your average MPG leading up to that point. So it may not be accurate if you start gunning your engine.

At last fill up it read "36 miles to E" and it took 10.5 Gallons, that would leave 1.9 gallons.
My average for that tank was 25.9mpg @ 1.9 gallons would = 49 miles. But only if I could suck the tank bone dry and get all of the 1.9 gallons left.
In that case the 36 miles to E would be pretty accurate and there would still be about 1/2 of a gallon left.

They will never give you that "bone dry" number because running out of gas with modern fuel injection cars is not a good thing and they are leaving a buffer. I think it is quite reasonable for them to do so.

My DTE typically shows 20 miles when I fill up and I usually have 1 to 1.5 gallons left in the tank, so I usually really have 35 to 40 miles to go. So in my case I might really have 15 to 20 miles left after DTE gets down to 0.

I've driven about 10 miles past 0 a couple times...

But, as always, YMMV. Literally.

Be very careful with it. Doing hand math for my vehicle, when I fill up at 0, if I expect that I am still getting equivalent mileage to what's on the display, when I reach 0, the fillup takes 11.8~ gallons, leaving only about a half gallon reserve. One of these days, I will put a fuel can in the car to see just how much reserve there is there, but I haven't had the time yet.

Mine lights up at 30. Car stops at 18. "empty" I still have a very small amount of gas left in my trunk and it makes it to 28 but still my car doesn't start... :( I will never trust my foci again when it hits 30 miles to E.

In your owner's manual:
The advertised capacity is the indicated capacity and the empty reserve combined. Indicated capacity is the difference in the amount of fuel in a full tank and a tank when the fuel gauge indicated empty. Empty reserve is the amount of fuel in the tank after the fuel gauge indicates empty.

Note: The amount of usable fuel in the empty reserve varies and should not be relied upon to increase driving range. When refueling your vehicle after the fuel gauge indicates empty, you might not be able to refuel the full amount of the advertised capacity of the fuel tank due to the empty reserve still present in the tank.

I was completely befuddled the other day when I set the nav system for a trip and my passenger asked me, "Where's E?"

"What do you mean, 'where's E?' What's E?"

"The car says it's 183 miles to E. Where's E?"
Yeah, someone was looking at the instrument panel display and thinking it had something to do with the destination rather than an estimated range remaining based on the current fuel level in the tank and the projection based on the average mpg of that tank.

Update - filled up last night after driving 5 miles past 0... car took 11.9 gal.
