Greetings. My name is Tyler Perkins and I'm a current student at UTI and I am now going under the Ford Accelerated Credential Training (FACT) and I have access to the new model training of the 2005 focus and found out why there is no key on the crank pully. They started using a friction washer instead and in order for technicians to do any service to it they have to use a dead stop inserted into the block. I can get you the complete list of instructions on how to remove it and install it if you are interested from what I gathered its simple just need to follow the instructions to the letter! And from the looks of it you might need the tool that is inserted into the block and a crank pully holder.

Talk to ya later

no keyway on the crank... does that apply to all duratecs, or just the 2005's?

i would imagine the crank timing gear is keyed though.

another q... is the reluctor wheel for the crank position sensor part of the crank pulley?

because if that is true, you could "index" your reluctor to advance or retard ignition timing across the board, which is a good thing tuning wise :)

None of the duratec cranks are keyed.

If you advance or retard the timng like that I thing you would run into several problems, at diffenerent situations you want different advances and changes in your timing table, not a constant addition across the board. Do things right with proper tuning and you will see much better results.

Will be dynoing some more tuning this friday, I'm expecting to break into the 160whp range.

of course something like a SCT setup would be best, but for the average backyard enthusiast something like this might be a few free hp, or for a low boost turbo application, a way to solve detonation issues

previous to the wholly programmable SCT PCM re-flashers, the s/c mustang cobra boys used a similar tactic with an adjustable wheel made by mac performance to subtract/add advance and it worked well to control detonation when adding boost via a smaller s/c pulley.

i think you hit the nail on the head though... it's about doing things right.

i have an SCT package in one of my ZX2's (tuned by a BIG name shop in So Cal), and a stock ford PCM w/ iat/ect resisitors in my other ZX2, and the performance difference between the two is minimal. in fact, the resistored PCM has better drivability over the SCT.

i've even swapped the pcms between the two cars to confirm it's not something else and the same results occur.

cost of the SCT reflash package w/ programmer - $800. cost of the resistors and switching relays to find up to 16hp at R&D Dyno - $30.

as for durability of the $30 mod, i've run the resistors on that car for over 70,000 miles now w/o any issues once the tuning part was completed.

am i saying moving the crank pulley around is more efficient than a fully programmable SCT? heck no. but it's worth taking a look at, much like the resistor mod i did w/ my first ZX2 - could be cheap hp potential.

a little off the topic But how long have you been at UTI, and the FACT program I am seriously planning on going there in about a year. Can you pm me more info on what you are learning and what you recomend for me to prepare before I attend,

Thanx

trust me man uti is great, you can finish in 12 months i believe. The only thing is you dont do anything but take auto, so no core classes which is fine if thats what your looking for.......

I actually got a scholorship from Automotive youth educational system (ayes), so im going to take asep (chevy) and im interning at frank para chevorlet.

Then off to brookhaven i go and i will actually recieve a bachalors degree and a ase certification!

In my oppinion if you want more than to be a mechanic, go somewhere else, but if not uti and wyotech are were you want to be

ps.....uti's performance center owns

So what you mean is that If I want to become more than just a mechanic I should go to UTI? And that their performance center is the best right?

i joined the military and learned all that you learn in 6 months plus get more so the military is the best way. j/k im not trying to recruit anyone. but i was gonna go to UTI then i picked the aitforce and got my cerifications in 6 months

UTI is only for mechanics, nothing more.....

core classes mean math english science, that way you get more than just ase certified
yeah but isnt any technical school like this?

well yes, but what happens if your compressing springs and the spring compressor breaks loose? how what else could you do with that ase certification? nothing, thats why uti isnt the best to be at

were as "brookhaven" i take college coarses also and then i get a bachalors degree which means i have a way out if i dont want to be a mechanic

thats just my view and since Frank Para Chevorlet is paying for me to go to brookhaven im not complaining :)

I got a "ayes" scholarship so i get 2,995 dollars in snap on tools for only 300 cost to me, plus when i finish my training i have a guaranteed job at frank para making 55k+.....and then if i decide i dont want to be a mechanic anymore the college degree makes me able to become a automotive teacher because you need 2+ years in auto mechanics and atleast a bachalors degree......

so do yourself a favor and look in the future.....are you going to be a mechanic forever?

I have bad news for you guys after you send the 14k(that was in 1999 I have no idea what uti charges now)you will still start out as a low paid grunt because you may have the basics down but you don't have the experience, I can personally say at my dealership they would rather have someone who hasn't been to a school because we don't have to untrain them, and at the dealer they will PAY YOU to go to ford certifyed school(not you paying them)! just something to think about before you spend almost 10 years paying back a student loan that may no benifit you. not completly trashing the schools but its not the best for everybody

I went to uti in Houston

madmark10 I think you have a good thing going but I dought the pay they have promised you if it is then you are lucky!
