I have found that if I use lossless audio (.flac, Windows Media Audio Lossless, etc... .wav is what SYNC supports) it sounds amazing. But that is just me. Everyone has preferences. The only downside is the amount of room it takes. It is generally around 20-30 MB per file vs. 3-4 MB per file for mp3.

I would say get an aftermarket radio and then get a sub, that's what I'm working on, small bits of it at a time. You can keep the stock radio, buts it won't sound as good, and won't give you as much control. Good luck with what you go with! I will be following this thread since I want to add a sub soon as well [cheers]

Get a cheap $100 radio off of crutch field. If you wan clean bass get either alpine type e, Rockford p1, infinity kappa, or kicker cvr and place it in a sealed box. Size of sub really depends on music you listen to.

I can easily build a system for under $300

Research is the key. Google it and see who sells stuff in your budget

yeah what he said^LOL it all really depends upon what type of music you listen to, I really have would you would call the swiss army knives of systems...I can sound good while listening to bass 305, bass mechanic,or techmaster peb. By the same token it can sound good while listening to jason aldean, toby keith or george strait.

I 3rd what slammed_2.0 said. Just get your stuff little by little and go from there. I have a 12" Infinity Kappa and its plenty for such a small car. I was able to piece a whole system (DVD indash, all speakers, sub, box, sum amp, all install) for around $800-900! I took my time and planned everything out to work together well and got it over a few months. Also checkout Sonicexectronix.com they sell more gear in a month then Crutchfield does in a year, there prices are great too.
Good luck

Judging by the way this person is posting he might be better off buying from Crutchfield as they actually honor warranties (certain gear has no warranty if not sold be verified dealer) and they have killer instructions and phone support..

Just a though...

I would say buy a line output converter, a 300W amp, sub & box and an install kit and have fun.

Im slightly confused to how the watts work? anyone give a quick break down. For example if i get speakers say 100 watts ea( not sure if thats reasonable) then got a 400 wat sub would a 500w amp be good to use?

If you are asking these questions you need to do quite a bit of research before you even start looking on how to take your car apart and start wiring.

You obviously have an internet connection, start searching -

I would recommend speakers that have and RMS Rating around 60-90 watts, the RMS rating is the nominal, or regular running power of the speakers. on an aftermarket head unit you will probably get about 25 watts RMS for each channel by 4. So if down the road you attach a 4 channel amp then you would look at something that runs 4 speakers at about 80 watts RMS and at 4ohms. (since all car stereos are designed to run at 4 ohms, for the speakers.) For your sub you need to determine the RMS rating of the sub and whether it is a dual voice-coil or a single. then find an amp that will meet those power requirements or exceed them by a minimal amount. For wiring everything in the Focus it is not overly difficult it took me about 3 hours to get everything wired clean and tight. I ran the power to my amp from the battery through the grommet to the left of the brake pedal and then back under my carpet by the drivers side door to the trunk, (just popped the rear seat out) overall it wasn't too bad, if you have more questions these guys know what they are doing so let us know what is going on!

Read the forums - yes.

I am running my stock Sync head unit and tied one of these in to get signal back to my subs.

I pulled my factory sub, cut a piece of plywood to mount in the stock sub location and mounted my amp to it. Ran my hot wire from under hood through a hole in the clutch pedal blank and into the trunk. Wired it all up. Did the same thing when I had my 08 SE.

Its a pretty straight forward process. I am running 2 12" Kicker Comps. It gets the job done for sure. I run my bass setting at 1/3 to 1/2 way on the dash display. More than you would ever need or want at times.

I'm using a LOC off one of my rear speakers to drive my subwoofer - I hate using them, but it sure beats the price tag of a DAC.
