O.K guys... as some of you may know I have a built Zetec engine (NA). been running good with some rattling going on but that just sounds like a bad mount. I was driving to work, car running good, we hit a lil traffic and as I let go off of the brake pedal to go it went for 10 secs and then died... tried to start it back up and no go. It makes a ticking sound and the engine doesnt turn. it isnt the battery and while I was on the side of the road I changed the spark plugs which looked a lil bad but not the culprit...any idea guys? remember the engine does not crank, it isnt the battery (boosted_ and not the plugs (just changed, BNIB). It is securly parked across the street from the projects in Brooklyn so I am sure it will be lightened for me by the neighborhood mechanics by the time I get back to it.... BTW if you are going to tell me it is a fuse or a wire or something please tell me exactly where it is, dont assume that I know anything...Please hurry.

How do you know that it's not the battery?

If the Engine is not turning, it's either the battery, starter or starter relay, PATS(your key's security chip and the reader), or the engine is seized up!

If it's making a clicking noise, then it's not the PATS. If you want to start with the cheapest problem, swap the starter relay with another one and see if anything changes.

Check out this thread of me being an idiot. http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/showthread.php?t=207382&page=2

If you want to check your starter, don't do it like I did in the pic. Connect your negative to the body of the starter.

the engine is seized up!
That would be my fear. A built engine that is rattling then ticks then dies. Sounds like things when from bad to worse.

PSA - if your car breaks down in a bad neighborhood, call a tow truck. Thieves can cost a lot more than a wrecker. Me, I have AAA Plus with the 100 miles of towing mostly because I know that I will break something at the track sooner or later and need a way home, but I have also used it to rescue the car when it died in a less than stellar locale.

That IS the only scenario that would have caused the car to die while it was already running, but there's always a chance that there's more than one problem.

Do you recall any engine lights or weird noises before the car died? *trying to remain optimistic*

Perhaps something in the main wiring harness shorted out? Since the starter gets a main battery feed that would explain why it would tick and nothing else happens. I, like you, just think that with it being a built engine that was already making noise, chances are good (but bad for the owner) that something went catastrophically wrong on the inside.

the ticking is from the buckets not being clearanced b4 the cam upgrade. The battery is good because we tried to start it up while it was being boosted, lights arent dim or anything just not working.. it doesnt tick constantly just does one tick and the lights start going. I am leaning towards a loose wire or a fuse. no weird noises at all before it dies...it was running then it wasnt.

1. The 3 wire plug that goes to your coil pack. There's a green blue wire that runs to your main relay/fuse as well.

2. There's a small ground wire that runs from the main harness (mines tucked) to the negative terminal.

3. Ground from the engine hook/hanger to the strut tower.

4. The main relay.

Also check the positive battery cable all the way to the starter.

...the engine is seized! finally got out there (nothing stolen) tried a few things everything seemed fine. I went to manually crank the engine and no go! I am really hoping it is a crack cam shaft or something easy cause I would hate for this POS to be in the actual block like the crankshaft. im gonna get started on this tomorrow...ofcourse it will be in the 20s, why the F@ck cant this happen during the summer?

ok so it is not a cam shaft...now going towards it being the bearings for the crank..the reason being is because I was hearing a noise that sounded like a warped roter and the brakes engaging it every so often...im guessing that was the crank bearings wearing down now...I took off the drip pan and the crank is not immediately seen..how the hell do I get to this biatch w/o taking the whole engine out?

Get the crank out? It is possible with the block still in the car but the transmission must be removed in order to remove the clutch or flexplate (depending on the transmission).

To do a good and correct job though your going to have a much easier time just taking the entire thing out, putting it on a stand, and doing it there.

not an option...remember all Im trying to get to is the bearings on this thing... most likely it is the bottom bearing and if it is I will take one out at a time and replace it until I got them all done...sometimes it is possible to get top ones too (on some cars)...has anyone done crank shaft bearings on these cars before?

I may just try to replace the main bearing and go from there...this way I can sell it in working condition and people dont have to worry...thats right I am parting out. I just need a reliable DD now and cant really afford to be dicking around with a project car.
