Some Power Steering Diagnosing Help needed for SVT - Some Power Steering Diagnosing Help needed for SVT - Update w/ pics

Ok so first the car.
2002 SVT Focus with 192,000 plus miles.
Fluid has never been changed for at least 100K.

3 Weeks ago the high pressure line cracked on me with the Original OEM Line. Broke where the port comes off the line for sensor. Started leaking while running errands. Didnt think too much of it besides wear and tear, northern car so corrosion and OEM line at 192K. Had to have it towed to local service shop cause I need a car for sales so had to get a rental and keep working and let someone do this for me.

Shop replaced the pump from Ford but local parts stores only had Edelmann; another Ford Disc part since 2009. Installed everything back together. All was good. Exactly one week and at least 200 miles the Line started leaking through the nut and down the center of the line. Thinking bad fittings and seals. Leaks like a mother! Had to get towed cause it emptied resevior immediately on the highway. Even bought fluid trying to top it off...Just leaked immediately and reservior was bone dry again by the time I got back on the highway....just a few minutes. 3K RPMs just blew it all out.

We get another Edelmann line under warranty and labor claim. Week later...same thing happens. This time almost 3 hours north of where I live on the way back to Jersey and PA. Hello another $175 tow and another rental. Drove through the night to get to Jersey. Been a long day.

Any chance the Rack is having a valve close or something causing way too much pressure between rack and high pressure line? Edelmann Tech Services think its bad seals. This will be the third line from Edelmann we are putting on the car; I'm to the point that they had a bad manufacturing run or something else is happening. Leak starts on the highway....but I spend most my time there. Rack and power steering feels great in city driving and parking and shopping...feels NEW since we put the new line and pump on. Then WHAMMY! At 3-4K RPMs and a few hundred miles and cycles it starts to leak and I have to pull over. In Florida...no stress on the rack on these highways so we find it hard to believe the rack is at fault or causing back pressure between rack and pump after 200-300 miles. Think if the rack was bad, its bad. Shouldnt need 200-300 miles for the rack to do something silly again. But for seals....200-300 miles is a 100 mile gap for a bad manufactured seal to go bad...consistently.

Going to order a Gates PS line as well now and have that shipped over. May just put that on instead versus another Edelmann line; at least have the tech inspect and see what he sees. Doing google searches and searches on forums....not too many hits for bad racks. And I would think that under city driving and parking loads the lines would leak from the rack...or the rack would show some signs of issues! 3-4K RPM load and highway driving; thinking the pump spinning at that RPM just keeps blowing the seals after a little while of driving.

What do yall recommend? Has anyone else had Edelmann line issues? Feel like start with a Gates Line...and if that goes...put in a new rack :(

UPDATE: Gates owns Edelmann....they may make the lines for both companies at the same plant. Going to order anyways to check. They do have different warranties so maybe they do source differently.

SVT has different PS pump from the other foci's + you have to bleed the PS system just the way you bleed the brakes. It happend to me once the system had air in it & it was blowing the hoses. Before all this check you high pressure switch that if its working.
The SVT steering goes harder as you drive faster, I don't if the regular pump do that.
Good Luck

How do you bleed the power steering like brakes ? You mean by turning the wheel lock to lock a few times ?
Sounds like junk parts. Get Ford OEM lines. Why was the pump replaced, if only the line blew out ? Usually a rack will leak if It Is bad. Pressure switch is for the IAC. If you are turning the steering wheel while stopped at an idle. The ps pressure switch will raise the idle speed to make turning easier.

Ford discontinued the SVT PS Line over 2 years ago and they show none available nationally. So stuck with aftermarket. I think the line has a bad fitting and seals from Edelmann the more I think about the what's been going on. The pump was replaced cause it has 190K on it and I drove it without fluid when the line broke. Had no idea it leaked all the fluid out until I came to a stop. Had no smoke until stopped and then you could just smell burning fluid and smoke. So I wanted a new pump because of that.

How do you bleed PS system. Curious how air cause an issue with blowing fluid through seals and fitting.

Dealer checked national stock for the line. Showed none in the country. Half tempted to just put a new rack in it since at 192K and something had to cause the factory line to pop 4 weeks ago. Ill check into the CFM kit.

Update....mechanic said throw a rack in it so we did. Also did find a Gates Line..all the fittings so far looked different for where the line connects to the pump. This has been a huge PIA. Broke down by another mechanic in Titusville who said the rack felt funny; I trust him so Ford Reman went in.

So far so good. Steering feels light and new. Just needs front alignment tomorrow so I can tell how the car feels in turns. Right now a little toe out so it kind of has some extra forces playing at the wheel.

My mechanic that did the lines before this latest development of a new rack and gates line still thinks its something else. He thinks they would have felt something wrong with the rack when bleeding the system for the other two lines. Also feels like that the shouldnt be seeing too much pressure since there is a bypass in the pump? Never heard that one. Maybe not bypass, but something to basically keep pressure from building up if there is a resitriction. Eitherway, so far its been over $1800 in tows, parts, and labor and a few weeks of Focus Steering Hell.

If it lasts this weekend; i think its solved. So Saturday I am going to drive up and down the highway all afternoon so if it breaks; it breaks locally.

Here are some pictures. First two are of the last failed line and the new one edelmann sent.

Last two are of the gates currently installed on the car. Really only angle I can get until tomorrow when its on the alignment rack. Anyone know if the brown stuff on this first pic would be the seal? Or should I already be worried?!? Hard to see in below image so added the image in a larger size. Video of how tight that fitting is on the replacement edelmann. Makes Edelmann tech feel like could be the wrong seal inside.
