Having purchased a SPEC Stage 2 clutch and aluminum flywheel two years ago, my clutch is now slipping. My standard SVT clutch lasted 8 years!!!
Now, I know there were people on this site who said.....SPEC suck....but I ignored them! Well, they were right!

Firstly, the clutch only lasted two years. Secondly, with the flywheel I had purchased, I was now obliged to buy a SPEC clutch once more. I ordered a new Stage 2+ SPEC clutch from LMPerformance, whom I had purchased everything from before. Weeks went by and no clutch came. I called LMPerformance, and they said that SPEC had told them that my two year old SPEC SF30A flywheel was not compatible with their Stage 2+ clutch. Sad that LMPerformance had not bothered to call or e-mail me about this and had seemingly waited until I called to ask for status!!

No worries I thought. On LMPerformance’s request, I called SPEC and confirmed that my SF30A was not compatible with the Stage 2+. It had to be used with their new flywheel version, the SF30A-2. I told them that I would simply get the Stage 2 instead, which is what was already on my car. Well, apparently my two year old SF30A flywheel was no longer compatible with their Stage 2 clutch too!!

So, at this time, I now have a 2 year old flywheel which is good for nothing, and a two year old clutch that slips badly. Hence, I not only need a clutch but a new flywheel. SPEC said that my issue was with LMPerformance and not them, and that any discount I might request on a new flywheel is up to them.

Paul, at SPEC (1-800-828-4379, ext. 100) was quite calm when I suggested that it wasn't good for his company's clutch to last a mere 2 years, and that anyone who might have purchased their supporting hardware (flywheel) were now at a loss on their investment. On telling him that I would have to consider other clutch manufacturers, he had nothing to say! What a great company......obviously not interested in customer retention!!!!!!!!!

Clutchmaster or the like, here I come.....certainly not SPEC!

Cheers, Shane

stage 3 clutch from CM lasted about 40k miles.. Youll never get factory wear on High performance clutches... 2 years? How many miles? Went Factory clutch for a little bit on my 250whp car at 10k miles its ready to die lol 40+ is hard to achieve i would think without something like Clutchmasters awesome twin disc set up

My problem with SPEC is that having invested in a flywheel only two years ago, it is now obsolete, because it apparently no longer compatible with ANY of the current SPEC clutches!

What was there explaination, I cant imagine that the fly wheel steel insert, has any thing to do with there new clutches. Did they change the mount holes or something like that. Even some one elses clutch should bolt right up. Give CFM a call and talk to Jeff or Will. I bet a different clutch assembly will work..

You bought a Pre-TSB clutch/flywheel setup, that's the problem. Ford redesigned the OEM clutch/flywheel (larger diameter) and the the manufacturer of the old style clutch hats stopped producing those, thereby eliminating "blanks" for anyone to make the old style clutches. So EVERYONE that has an SVT and needs a new clutch has to get the new style. I'm in the same predicament.

What sucks even worse is that the new aftermarket pieces will not even bolt up to the Post-TSB OEM bits. So you can't bolt up a new style SPEC or CM clutch to a new OEM flywheel etc. So you have to now decide if you want to stick with stock or stick with aftermarket.

CFM sells the new OEM clutch/fly kit for $529.

econorocketZX3, you are correct. However, even after two calls with SPEC, not one person there told me the reason I had to get a new flywheel to work with their new clutch!! It was only when I talked to an excellent individual at CFM, who explaind the simple situation.
So, I went with a new Clutchmaster FX300 and aluminium flywheel setup from them. My SPEC clutch lasted less than two years (about 20,000 miles) which I was surprised at! We'll see how the Clutchmaster does!
Cheers, Shane

I certainly hate that you are frustrated and I am happy to help shed some light on the situation. Econo's explanation is correct and our sales and tech staff are aware of this and share this information in instances exactly like yours. If this info was not relayed I certainly apologize.

Because of the production stop on the older style Ford assemblies there is no way to buy a unit that will fit with the older non-2 flywheel. In such an instance we would have been happy to provide a discounted price. Though, based on your statements above, this isn't exactly what you wanted to hear.

It is worth noting that clutch wear and life are relative to a number of factors. These include, driving style, torque output and clutch stage chosen, usage type, etc... because the clutch lasted 2 years your issues would not likely have been manufacturing or materials related. That being said I am happy to look at pictures of the parts you have to assist in determining the cause of your wear. Let me know if you have any further questions or if you want to send me some pics, my direct email is Jeremy@specclutch.com. Thanks,

I have a 3+ in my 500+ hp cobra and have never had any issues...sounds more like you didn't buy the proper clutch for the application...

lowflyn.....wrong application???

Stage 2 clutch........daiuly driver.....45 mile comute, mostly on the freeway!

I loved the clutch...great feel...great grip. But it didn't last as long as I thought it should.

SPEC-01....thank you so much for your comments. I loved the SPEC clutch, and having had a Clutchmaster FX300 on the car now, I can say the SPEC felt so much better. I have to say that if, on the two occasions that I talked to SPEC, they had told me about the Ford changes and reasons why my flywheel was now obselete, I would have definately considered buying SPEC again.

So, with a better understanding of the "why", I will definately consider SPEC again.

I do have the SPEC clutch and flywheel still and, as invited by you (SPEC-01), I would love to send you photos of anything that would help you and me understand why my clutch lasted the short time it did. So, SPEC-01, canyou e-mail me, and tell me what I need to send you (specific photos)? I will e-mail you.

Many thanks to all for the input.

Cheers, Shane

well guys i have had SPEC in my mustangs( drag & street) for 12 yrs. i have even had the chance to hang with the owner at races. i seen your post. contacting them last night. JEREMY replied very fast & wants to help. I hope his joining & taking the time to talk to you all will install trust back in there product.

I am happy to assist relative to technical information and support any time. In fact this is one of about 12 forums that I frequent for this very reason. As for pictures SVTbrit I would like to see both sides of the disc as well as the pressure-plate surface and flywheel surface. This will provide a good amount of info and allow me to better assess the situation.

Additionally I want to make sure that you and others understand...2 years of use does not evidence any form of material or manufacturing deficit. Our parts have a 120-day warranty that covers manufacturing and materials because if there is a problem with one of these aspects it will be very evident very quickly. Please let me know if you all have any further questions. Thanks!
