I've not seen any threads on this but have seen 180 degree thermostats for sale at several performance store sites. Anyone using these and what's the effect?

"Just the trick for lowering water temperature for horsepower gains. The factory thermostat is 192°. We have 170° thermostats. A must for turbo or supercharged cars."

This is from the focus central website.

As in almost all cases with cars, cars that run at cooler temperatures preform better. It's the same as any other increase in cooling, i.e. preformance radiator, or better fans, etc... you are able to squeeze more hp out of the engine because it doesn't have to work as hard, plus cooler air cumbusts more easily, allowing for more efficent operation of the engine.

Prehaps I should have been more speific, I agree it will not give you MORE hp but it does help the engine to free up power that is already there that can then be used for other things making operation more efficent and prolonging engine life.

lwnslw is right all the way.

The stock SVT thermo is 198, not 192. I am running a 180* and Water Wetter. it runs noticeably cooler, but if I were not going FI and getting tuned, I probably wouldn't consider it...especially if I still lived up north. Down here in Houston, its nice though.

I doubt that you would see any benefit. The original reason for the hotter temp is cleaner combustion, i.e. polution control. I agree that you would need more radical changes including chip to see any benefit.

Can some one answer this for me, I have mild mods and water wetter and do not plan going F/I (I wish), will I benifit from a lower temp thermostat? Would it be worth it for me to install, will I notice any diffrence? Thanks.
Nah, not on the streets of Ohio. Maybe on the track in SoCal or FLA, etc.
