alright so my focus is acting up. im no mechanic and i was wondering if anybody has had this problem, when im accelerating i am gettinga huge lossin power and my spedometer jumps rapidly. like ill be going 40mph and it will jump to 90 and even 100. i can here a small ticking sound coming from the gauges and the whole car kinda laggs/misses/jumps [dunno] . i kno my description is bad lol but i could really use some help shes going in the shope monday. but if this matters its a 2000 focus zx3 with the zetec motor. thanks everybody. lol

are all the battery terminals tight? I had a similar problem but my gauges would fall not shoot up...

yeah there all tight and everthing is in tack..... thats what worries me. i have done alittle research and i was wondering if it could be a headgasket? im honestly stumped. i am not good with engines anyways lol but its my daily driver and i need an idea where to start looking. btw new plugs/wires(less than 1k miles ago)

there are ALOT of things that can cause a car to spit and sputter and jump around on you but only electrical problems will cause that in combination with making your gauges go nuts. you sir have an electrical problem. make sure all the wires going to and from the battery, alternator, and starter are intact and in good working order. in other words not melted, stiff as solid steel, or have bare wire showing through the jacket anywhere. also make sure that your engine ground is good. if it is loosing its connection at odd increments then that would be why your problem seems to strike at random.

ok i will check it tomorow all i know is its a pain in the ass. lol but its something i have never seen or heard of before.... also its throwing a CEL p301 i believe and it has to do with the first cylinder misfiring. now i checked my plugs and wires and distributor. what else should i look for?? i feel like im doomed lol

All good ideas, have the charging system load tested. Any auto parts store will do it for free. This sound like a failing alternator. It starts out intermittant, and then will fail. When the voltage gets to low the gauges start to do some really weird stuff, as you described. And you will get misfire codes from the low voltage also. Battery, Alt, Positive cable. And All 3 body grounds. Make sure all are in good shape. It really helps to make the ground wires from thicker gauge wire..If you do some searches in Technical forum you will find numerous threads on this exact problem...

Is the car throwing a check engine code?

If it is go and get ure self a OBDII scan tool from any auto aprts store about 50 bucks and scan ure car and get the code.

If not well all i can say is double check ure plugs.

its throwing a CEL p301
Is the car throwing a check engine code?
[|)] basically what you already said, misfire more than likely due to lack of spark due to an electrical gremlin

P0301 through P0310 - Misfire Detection Monitor The misfire detection monitor is designed to monitor engine misfire and identify the specific cylinder in which the misfire has occurred. Misfire is defined as lack of combustion in a cylinder due to absence of spark, poor fuel metering, poor compression, or any other cause. Ignition system
Fuel injectors
Running out of fuel
EVAP canister purge valve
Fuel pressure
Evaporative emission system
Base engine
