Yes, the 05-07 duratec come with a "lifetime filter". Its about 3 layers of solid foam so it probably filters pretty good but is horrible for performance. It is a sealed box and you will hack it to pieces trying to get it apart.

If you want a serviceable filter then I would suggest upgrading to a short ram intake or a cold air intake. There is a thread at the top of the Duratec performance chat covering all the possible intakes.

I've been running a cold air intake for over 3 years, on two different foci, with no issues.

oh ok... i wonder how it doesn't get clogged right up in time... i mean i've seen how dirty the filter gets in my truck in just 15000kms and i can't imagine leaving a filter in for the car's life

ITs not only a solid piece of foam its a series of chambers then it leads up to the foam. so most of the stuff is filtered out before hand. It cost 300 bucks to replace that stupid box and your sapposed to do it at 60,000 miles.

Dont think its at 60k. Per our Sheduled Maintenance guide:
Code:
60,000 miles
âť‘ Change engine oil and replace oil filter.
âť‘ Inspect tires for wear and rotate.
âť‘ Inspect brake pads/shoes/rotors/drums, brake
lines & hoses, and parking brake system.
âť‘ Inspect wheel ends for endplay and noise.
âť‘ Inspect engine cooling system and hoses.
âť‘ Inspect exhaust system and heat shields.
âť‘ Inspect steering linkage, ball joints, suspension and,
if equipped, half shafts, driveshaft and U-joints.
âť‘ Replace fuel filter (see page 47) (not required
for Fusion, Milan & Zephyr).
[B]âť‘ Replace engine air filter (not required for Focus).[/B]
Code:
150,000 miles
âť‘ Change engine oil and replace oil filter.
âť‘ Inspect tires for wear and rotate.
âť‘ Inspect brake pads/shoes/rotors/drums, brake
lines & hoses, and parking brake system.
âť‘ Inspect wheel ends for endplay and noise.
âť‘ Inspect engine cooling system and hoses.
âť‘ Change Motorcraft Premium Gold Engine Coolant
(see exceptions page 46 and record page 48).
âť‘ Inspect exhaust system and heat shields.
âť‘ Inspect steering linkage, ball joints, suspension
and, if equipped, half shafts, driveshaft and
U-joints.
âť‘ Replace fuel filter (see page 47) (not required

[B]âť‘ Replace engine air filter (except Focus, see
below).[/B]
[B]âť‘ Check air filter restriction gauge, replace filter as
required (Focus only).[/B]
They really think its a lifetime filter I guess. Has any '05-'07 owner had to replace theirs sooner?

You may not be, I got that from a 2007 manual. So it could have changed from 2004 until 2007, especially since there weren't too many duratechs out in 2004.
Either way, I was happy to take mine out at 38000. Made a noticeable difference, wish I had done it sooner.

Im saving for an intake but since in 2004 there were very little 2.3l duratechs there arnt to many intakes out there. i want a short ram not a cold air. i don't want to hit a puddle and i get water lock.

my 06 says 150,000 also.I'm looking at the short ram also.Same as you don't want to water lock.I got 93,000 miles and the gauge on the box is still in the green.

Hydro lock shouldnt be too big of a concern, unless you are driving through massive puddles. The area of the car is fairly well protected from water splashing but it is something that i think about when driving in rain. Either way, SRI or CAI, its an upgrade vs the stock airbox

offtopic:
Also, driving through Hinkley is always fun. I used to take 303 when ever I had to head east through that area. Used to drive that way when heading to Pennisula or Streetsboro when going back to Kent. Plus some really sweet hiking around there too.

I've had my CAI on two different foci over a course of 3 years, all seasons, all kinds of conditions. From 24+ inches of snow to torrential downpours on 5 lane highways following semi's and I've never once felt the engine stumble. Now I don't try to run through huge puddles but I've hit plenty and never had a problem. If you have your drivers side tire well splash shield and bottom splash shield in place you wont have a problem unless you drive into a lake.

I have a 09 D2.0 and you can easily access the filter by popping off the clips on the air intake box. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to drop in a K&N high flow filter in place of the stock one. I wouldn't expect as much of a gain as a cold-air or short-ram though.

Only the duratecs up to 07 have the non-serviceable air filters. Ford changed the design for 08-09 to include a serviceable filter.

I remember I took my car to get its oil changed and the guy wanted to sell me a new air filter for my '07, probably around 10-20k miles. I went on to tell him that wasn't going to happen. Said he never heard of a non-serviceable air filter. I wanted to tell him to go ahead and see what he did but I didnt. [rofl]

I changed out my stock box on my 04 Duratec. If you're not even mechanically inclined like me it should take about 2 hours tops, most of that is getting the old one out of there. I did the stealth mod, sounds a lot better and have noticed a little bump in power.
