Hello all. New Focus owner here and I'm a little suprised to learn that the Focus appears to be the AR16 of the inexpensive, comact sedan world. LOL By that, I mean it looks like that with the right set of parts, a Focus can be about anything.

Anyway, that kind of versatility really appeals to me, and I'd like to learn more (and about mechanical stuff in general). Is there anyone here in WV who can guide a noob?

welcome to the site. I'm from WV (elkins) and there are a few more from the state. There are alot of people on the site who can answer questions and help you out.

What are your plans that you need help with?

Welcome! Ask away. I'm half-decent with the forced-induction side of things, transmission, suspension, tuning (my own anyway), fabrication, etc.
I can't help much with the "show" side of things though.
With two kids, my face-time is limited though so I can't help others with wrench turning very often.

Yeah I stick to the Forced Induction and Duratec Technical chats on here.
I'm a low-drama person, which is why I quit going to WVS and WVMS.
WVS got better for a while, but there just wasn't anything on there I wanted to talk about.
I do frequent Steel City Stangs. While I don't own a Mustang anymore, I like the group on there.

Car is doing well. On the 2nd engine, but that's due to overboosting plus a not so great tune. Not sure what went, but it was gradual and not boom.
This time around I know how to tune myself and exactly what to look for.
I'll be going back to the drag strip in either October or November when the air is really cool.
It would be nice to get a group from here to head up together to Pittsburgh Raceway Park or even to Mason Dixon in Hagerstown, MD.

Man, no one from around Charleston?? LOL Oh well, I suppose that's an excuse to go for a drive.

As for my plans, none really yet. I've had my car a whopping three days now. I had no idea the Focus was so versatile. Right off the top of my head, from what I've seen and read, what I think I'd LIKE to do is a couple of easy engine/exhaust tweaks (CAI and exhaust from FSWerks?) and some suspension/handling additions. Those stress bars seem like an easy job, but I'm sure the sway bars are another story. nd I'd like to lower it a bit.

Is there a recommended order to do the suspension stuff? Seems like the sway bars would go at the same time as the springs are replaced to lower it, correct?

these are some mods you should look at for under 500$ (each)

Performance

Exhaust- http://fswerks.com/exhaust.htm go to the second exhaust on the list they have that you can order, it's the race one, or choose from any others.
~380$ ~6hp

intake- http://fswerks.com/fswerks_coolflo_air_intake.htm
~200$ ~6hp

tuner- http://fswerks.com/sct_flasher.htm
~380$ ~7hp

Handling

Stress bars (rear, upper front, and lower front for best handling performance)-http://fswerks.com/stressbars.htm
~270$ total for all (VERY noticeable in turns i know personally)

Sway bars- http://fswerks.com/swaybars.htm
~445$ for both

these are just some examples i grabbed from fswerks.com I don't know much about the newer foci but i do know that the Ford racing suspension kit is amazing, i have it installed on my 03 zx3.

LOL That's almost an exact duplicate of my list. Except the flasher thing. I have no idea what that is. LOL Mechanics are not my forte'.

Are the stress bars worth doing w/o the sway bars? Of the things I want to do to my car, those and lowering it are last on my list, mainly due to $$$. Also, does the size/gauge of the stress bars matter? I notice a company called "Massive" makes front and rear tower struts that are beefier than the FSWerks. Or is that just marketing hype?

to be honest i have no idea about the "size" of the strut bars. i think massive bars would be better, but the fswerks ones do the same thing, Fswerks (formerly Focussport.com) bars are nice, i have the focus sport ones on my car and once i installed my rear along with the front stress bar i see a noticeable difference in corner hugging (much better).

the tuner is really nice cause you can customize a bunch of things for your car, nib nose around on fswerks on that link i gave you for the tuner. it will unleash power and let you do all sorts of things for your car that you normally wouldnt be able to do.

plus another bonus on the tuner is that if you get a turbo kit later down the road, you can use that tuner to datalog stuff and be able to load different types of programs onto your car so you don't have to have different ecu's to swap in and out.
