just unclipped it, looks like a regular air filter to me, looks like a motorcraft paper one...so does this mean a k&n drop in will work?

and its def a PZEV, says so under the hood and on the window...

Well, you shouldn't be able to access the air filter (especially easily) if it's a PZEV. On '09 and older PZEVs there aren't clips to remove to access the air filter, it's a big tube like airbox that's sealed.

maybe they changed it for 10? idk, i should be able to put a drop in k&n on it right? unless ford muffed up and forgot to put a pzev engine in it and slapped it with pzev stickers on hood and door...

Yep, I'm actually finishing the financing on a 2008 SE PZEV focus in Pittsburgh, PA. I was surprised when he popped the hood and I was like "wait... this isn't from Cali, is it?" He said that PA is a state where PZEV cars can be sent and many to their dealership was PZEV. :) I didn't mind, I drove a non PZEV car in Indiana and the performance in the "seat o pants" meter was pretty much the same. Go figure.

I found a 2008my focus order guide online... it looks like any state connected to an official Cali-std emissions state had PZEV as optional. PA is considered a cross border state and as such, PZEV engines were optional on orders. :)

I'm in California so was stuck with a PZEV. My 2010 SES has the same looking paper filter that yours (OP) has. I already changed my intake to the FSWerks and I love it. I recommend the FSWerks CAI.

It is still only supposed to be replaced every 100 something thousand miles.

Well, ya gotta remember that air filters are known as generally the most OVER maintained item on most cars - it's easy to point to a little dirt and sell someone on a new one...

I think it really depends where you are driving it b/c I've seen some pretty bad filters when the car is driven in some dirty conditions. I do agree that mechanics tend to screw people over by saying a filter needs to be changed when in fact, it is just fine.

Read up here on results from cheap intakes, any $ spent on them is just like taking a match to your wallet....

IF you don't end up with driveability problems, codes, etc., you're still taking a chance with poor filtration & likely NO performance increase - just extra noise that makes you THINK it's giving more power...

Wally - I hear ya on the dirt road thing, but few people actually drive in those conditions - spent part of one summer at a Valvoline oil change shop between other jobs, and saw the promotion of new filters to ANYONE who didn't already have a pristine new one...

Dave, go FSwerks CAI so I can see how another PZEV owner got it in. :)
Mine's a 2010 PZEV. Here are some pics!!

Had to pull the MAF wiring back on the harness a little ways. Re-tubed and wrapped.

The tube that connects underneath. The little grommet that holds it in the tube was the hardest part. Still an easy install.
