The early Contour/ZX2 had "VCT" on the exhaust cam. The SVT Focus has VCT on the intake cam. Neither of which are your car, LOL. Nothing you have to worry about.

Bump him and take his ass out. Black flag or not, you win.

The VCT isn't an advantage or a disadvantage for that matter. The thing he has 1 up on you is gearing. He has a bit shorter first gear and can get off the line better. But you've got a taller gear and when he shifts you'll catch up and it's a turtle race from there. Both cars are pretty well matched.
If he disables the VCT he will have a disadvantage.
