I'm looking into buying some new rims for my 03 Focus. I know that the wheels on my focus are 16". My question is if I get 17" or 18" will it have any affect on the gas milage or handling on my focus? Better? Worse? Is it worth making that 2 inch jump?

17's look great on our cars. 18's are good too... just IMO i like the 17's better

yeah 17" are the way to go, as far as gas mileage the differance is so small you wont notice, but everything else is a positive to a larger rim

Wheel diameter does not have a direct impact on any of those things (mpg or handling).

But tire size and wheel width will. I say go with 15's, I run a 15 x 7.5, with a 225 50 tire, its the way to go [woot]

Man, I was hoping to generate some anger with that comment...oh well.

I would say that a 17x7 wheel with a 45 profile tire would be the best compromise between ride quality and handling.

I find that my mileage goes up when cruising with my autox wheels, but I think that's 'cause I stop braking for corners[:D]

Can we fit 8'' wide tires under our cars with out rolling the fenders or hacking up the fender wells?
Maybe... Right now I run (for autox) a 7.5 inch rim with a 225 50 tire. The rim has a 45mm offset, and I run a 5mm spacer with it. My suspension is the roush stage two springs and dampers. Visually with this setup the front tires stick outside of the fender well, but as far as I can tell the fender doesn't contact the tire during autox events and definitely doesn't when I'm too lazy to change my tires for a few days after an event. The tire does leave some witness marks on the strut and the fender liners, this maybe from before I ran the spacers though.

Its going to come down to the wheel offset, the tire size, and your spring and damper setup (i.e. amount of drop and stiffness).
