I have to buy a car in the next month or so because I won't be able to empoyee lease anymore. I don't want to take on much debt because I am just out of college and looking for a "real" job. So basically I am looking at used cars in the sub-13 grand range. In a nutshell I don't want something which is going to make me look like a head driving it. I also want something that is going to be fun to drive, and have decent insurance rates.. Basically I am looking at a Mazda3, Focus 3 and 5 door, or a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Well that's my story.. here's my questions: (I have been lurking on this site a couple weeks and searching my questions)

How bad is the quality of the SVT? I'm planning on getting an 03-04, were most of the problems fixed by then?

What are the maintance costs like? do you have to goto SVT dealers only?

What goes wrong over 34K miles, I notice clutches, and trannys seem to be common?

How is the space? I am 6'3" 230lbs (although its coming off quickly).

Even though I want a hatchback, would it better to buy an ST?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forums!

The questions you asked are pretty general, but you will get plenty of answers from a lot of people. I'll try and answer some of them for you!

Quality is very good. I like it, especially the European Appearance Package--cooler looking wheels, HID headlights and black heated leather recaro interior. Pretty good stuff for a car this price.

Maintenance for me has been zilch. I haven't had any trouble yet, but apparently the clutch is occasionally a problem. It is a "TSB", or Service Bulletin, so if you take your car to a dealership because the clutch is shot prematurely, they will repair it for you as a Recall problem, free of charge.

Tranny's are great. It's the same transmission that goes into the Mini Cooper -S model, and I haven't heard much about SVT tranny problems....just usually a clutch problem I believe.

If the clutch is going to go prematurely, it will probably happen before 20,000 miles. If you go into the 30s and 40s, my guess is you don't have a faulty clutch and it will probably go to 100,000. Don't forget that the amount of people on here who do end up having a problem, is a very small amount compared to how many there are out there. There may be 80 people on here who have had a problem, but there were 14,000 SVTs sold +....small percentage.

I am 6'2, 220. I have long legs but I fit perfect in the SVT. The seat bolster's nicely and the headroom is superb over most japanese cars. Just sit in one when you get a chance and adjust it to your needs. The seat lowers and lifts electronically which is great, I put the seat in the all the way down position and I feel like I'm sittin' real low. Also the REAR headroom is 5 Stars. People our height having 6" plus headroom in the back....and the SVT has the 3 headrests which makes it much more comf.

As far as comparisons between the SVT and the ST go, and there are PLENTY of them if you do the search function, you will find very mixed opinions. I think there is a general consensus among SVT owners, that the SVT was probably the nicest Focus...maybe even one of the nicest cars that Ford has put into production. Especially the EAP package. In fact I think it's only the second car that Ford has put into production that has HID headlights...correct me if I'm wrong, but I think they are the Ford GT and the SVT focus. The ST is a very nice car, and it comes pretty nicely loaded. From what I have seen, and I have driven it a little bit, is that it is probably more along the lines of a japanese compact car. They are solid, and the door seals close like those on a german car, real nice and tight, and the seats are comfy. The interior is much more conservative and squared on the inside. The ST does have 4 wheel disc brakes, but the SVT's are a bit larger and much more powerful. The 2.3 motor is really torquey, but doesn't scream as hard in the higher end. The SVT is less torquey, but it has a 6 speed so you have to drive it like a six speed. If you do that, you will learn to appreciate the variable valve timing and raised cam lobes (alright..I'll just say it's kinda like vtec--even though I know it's not...nobody hate, please.). But yah, Just open it up after 5000 RPMs and listen..it sounds sweet.

To finish this off, I'll just say that I would recommend you drive them both. They will both impress you. The 2004 SVT Focus with EAP was $22,000. The ST, fully loaded, and brand new, is still a fair amount less. That should say that the SVT had a lot more time and thought put into it.

I love my SVT. I'm sure all the ST owners on here love their cars as well. Can't really go wrong with either. Good luck!

The problems aren't as bad as they sound. Personally I wouldn't buy an ST for the life of me, if you're going the route of a newer car model you should get an Mazda 3 fully loaded. It's 100 times the car and even more powerful stock v stock.

In fact, I would recommend a loaded 3 over the SVTF too. You have the C1 chassis which is a world ahead, better quality, and more aftermarket performance if you ever want to really get into it beyond daily driving.

I've got 46k on the clock of my SVT, and maintenance has been pretty minimal. It did need warranty work before I owned it, the exact specifics of which weren't divulged to me. Since about 40k I have heard the clutch knock, which means next summer I'm up for a clutch job. Apparently doing this means you need to remove the front subframe, which means I'm not doing it myself, which means its going to be an expensive piece of work.

The SVT is really good at what it was made for, but in my honest opinion its only marginal at the rest. The interior is pretty functional, as a tall person it will probably fit you better than it does me actually. Everything's just a little too far away for me. Interior quality was decent for its day, its lagging badly now with its more modern competition.

SVT worked on everything you actually touch. The aluminum pedals are nice, the leather steering wheel, gear knob and parking brake lever are nice. The gauges are some of the best I've seen personally, though I know there exist better. The full leather Recaro seats that came with the Euro package are supposed to be awesome. I wouldnt know, I have the much more mediocre leather/mesh seats. I've sat in much worse, they don't really stand out though.

To enjoy and be happy with the SVT long-term, you'll need a set of requirements that let you overlook the car's shortcomings. It will never be a particularly nice car. I've had a small handful of creaks and rattles already, and its a 2004. However, the car was put together in 2002, and you still need to look hard for a compact that handles as well. Really hard in fact, I can think of the Cooper S, the Miata, the Speed3 and the Civic SI.

Makes sure you shop around. Like I said, its awesome at what it does well, but if you're not buying what the car's selling, you won't be happy long term.

Mine had two really annoying rattles. One was easily fixed and caused by the dealership dicking with the wiring under my moonroof panel, some crazy glue fixed that up.

But my A pillar occasionally gets a rattle. It's REALLY annoying, but rare. No idea what causes it. Mine just ticked over 34,000 miles and is a 2004.

I have a couple rattles behind the passanger side door panel. Besides that, I bought mine used with 50,000 miles. Only problems I have had is the good old SVT Clutch Master Cylinder, O-ring for thermastat drain plug, and a frozen piston in my left front brake caliper. Besides that I am not at 86,000 miles with 5k being JRSC+BBK.

I have had some quirks, but nothing that wasn't able to be fixed.....warranty fixed all the main ones. motor mount (my hard shifting), cluster had scratches, stuff like that.....

I love my car, it's a blast to drive. I'd say go for an 03-04, you get a painted rear hatch trim, and they were pretty clean of early faults. I have 28,100mi on my car.....i have owned it for a little over a year. I bought it new, 191 mi. I won't ever be getting rid of it.

You better not...it's the last SVTF ever made!!! Of course, you already know that.

I won't be getting rid of my Focus for some time either. In fact, it is SUCH a good daily driver car, that I might keep it even after I make my millions, solely so I can lay low and out of radar when I don't feel like driving my benz or ferrari.

edit: of course, by then, it will have the much needed and much desired supercharger kit on it.

I like the Mazda 3. Especially new and fully loaded with a stick and not some girl-a-matic. However, The SVT is an unbelievably rare and amazing car. Like what was previous stated, its no longer made so it'll only get rarer, and rarer and rarer. If i had a good 50 grand though, I would buy a 3 and dump the rest in it performance wise. But, If you want something fun and capable of daily driving with the occasional street race here and there, go with the SVT. Im pretty biased though, go look at both in person. You wont go wrong either way.

I payed $12,500 for mine and it had 16k mi. It's fully loaded, so you can still find a low mileage example for good money, although you need to be willing to travel a little. I flew to oregon and drove it to arizona, fun drive through california though.

Thanks for all the replies!! The only reason I am concerned about maintaince is because I was looking at buying a new GTI, but I have never read so many problems with one car, and I really don't want to get 25+grand in debt right now and pay crazy insurance rates until I get settled with a decent job. I've pretty much driven Jeeps, since I was 16.. but I want something that isn't going to kill me when gas goes ballistic again. I've never had to buy a used car before, excpet for a couple classic firebirds which don't count.. is there anyway to find out if the car has had the TSBs, without having to take the seller's word for it?

Looking at the STs, if they only come in the four door sedan body style, then it's going to be an SVT for sure.. I love the hatch back body styles.

I really like the Mazda3s but I don't think I can find a 5-speed car in my price range with a reasonable amount of miles on it.

What should I look for when you look at used SVTs? Do they have rust problems? Again any way to check for the maintaince records, does that come with a CarFax report?

Thanks!

I don't think this is the right car for you. I grew up in Howell and I dread taking my car up there. The road kill this thing. It's a sweet car, but mine gets punished by the roads back home.

You can have the OASIS report checked in Ford's system to find out what has been done at the dealer. The cars had clutch problems among other things. A 5/100 powertrain warranty was added in the 03 year. It's based on the cars original purchase date and in MUST be transfered.

I love this car so much, I bought a Metro to drive back and forth to work.

Yeah, I only plan on being in metro detroit for a couple more months, I have a job lined up down south in the spring, so roads are not really a problem.

There is a Ford website that will tell you any Ford made repairs or service that was done through a dealer.

I have 41K miles and the only work I had to have done was the O2 sensor went bad. Other than that it has been a blast. I need to get some kill markers like the old war planes. Line the bak of it with little H's. lol You can't go wrong with on 04. Some came with HID's some didn't. Some came with a Winter package( Heated seats, traction control and block heater) Some didn't. The EAP added Recaro seats and OZ Superturismo looking wheels. Sorry EAP guys. Like said elsewhere, the fun factor goes way up after 4500RPM. That is when the WOW power kicks in.

My 2cents.

Carfax report is never a bad thing to have if you plan on buying a car. Especially since you're on the east coast, you never know if a car could have sat through a few hurricane's down south and then made its way north and into your hands.

Definitely check out the OASIS report. B16sir1991 will probably be happy to check the OASIS report out for you, if you send him a private message!

I wish I didn't have to put so many miles on it. If I had a house of my own and a garage of my own I would get a bike and leave my SVT tucked neatly away until I went out on the town. I have gotten so many compliments from friends and people who see it and stuff. The majority of the people out there will look at it and think "wow..that is a nice looking focus"..but they won't realize what it is. There are, however, a few people out there like myself who knew what it was..what it did...and why it was so cool even BEFORE ford released it in '02. For SVT enthusiasts and car enthusiasts in general, the SVTF is a very widely respected car.

Unfortunately, a lot of people can't respect it for what it is and to them it's "just a focus".

Show me another car that comes from the factory with xenon HID projector headlights, recaro leather heated seats, sick ass indiglo guages, power windows/locks/mirrors, a sunroof, a killer stock audio system with a (small, yes, but good enough for me) subwoofer, 17 inch OZ-like rims sitting in front of 12" and 11" disc brakes, a 6 Speed Getrag transmission and MUCH much more...all for the price of 14,500 with 25,000 miles on it. I don't think it can get much better than that...at all.

I've narrowed it down to a couple of cars that are within a sane driving distance. 3 04s, two 3 doors, one 5 door. They are listed around 13 grand, but I think I can get the dealer down to where I need him. I want seat heaters, and would like to try get HIDs.

2004 SVTf 5door silver, 22g miles, everything looks to be in good shape, but doesn't look like it has HIDs which I really want, but it looks like it has heated seats..

2004 3door SVTf, silver, 24g miles, non-factory (ugly) wheels. Has HIDs, but the interior looks a little rougher, and can't tell if it has seat heaters.

04 SVTf 3Door 19g Miles, Has HIDs, but doesnt look like seat heaters.

Basically I want the newest car with the lowest miles, at the best price [thankyou]. I have been driving a (soob) PT Cruiser lately, and I really like having 4 doors, so unless there is something totally wrong with the 5 door I think I might try to move on it, if it is still for sale. I e-mailed all the dealers late this afternoon and the 3 door with the ugly wheels is still available. But, I am hoping the 5 door is still available... I can always upgrade the headlights later because those HID projectors are soooo sexy.

Just a note, a wierd concidence all the low mile cars in my price range are silver w/blue interiors.
