I just get this 2002 focus automatic. It worked good the first few times I drove it but lately the button to release the shifter does not want to push in so I can shift out of park. I have seen several threads but am more confused than ever. I know this. Sitting in the car with door closed, foot on brake, car started i sometimes can get the button to push in sometimes not. I took that little plug off the console and pushed down on that white plastic thing with a screw driver and that seems to work but even that takes a little wiggling of the button. Thanks all.

I have checked all the fuses under the dash as recommended and they are all fine,

Those shifter mechanisms are known to fail/wear out/break.
There is a video available on replacing it, which is not particularly difficult, but involves removing the console between the seats.
Search youtube. I know I've watched a video on the procedure.

I think i got it fixed. I pulled up the handle. the rod that is activated by the button looked like it had lube on it at one time. I put some lithium grease on it and it seems to work fine now. as far as trying to get the console off. I watched u-tubes on that. Tried different ways and couldn't get it off. Mine has the fixed armrest between the seats making that a bit harder than the videos. thanks for answering.
