My daughter's 2003 Focus Sedan (105K) has had speedometer problems for a while, works less than half the time, sometimes on 0 sometimes bounces around. Also sometimes the gas gauge goes to full (when not) and the temp gauge goes to cold (when not), and sometimes gas and temp gauges work but speedo is still on 0. So this makes me think its likely not a sensor and in the cluster or something else (ground maybe?) We have not had any electrical problems, so asking some smart folks here what you think. Also is a replacement easy to do, and if so would i need to have the mileage reset for it to work (even if i got one with close milage), or also have it 'cloned'. I actually never heard of 'cloning, but spoke to someone at the 'instrumentclusterstore.org' who said they can't tell if it may need cloning or not, would have to pull and see if the car still starts....Is this true? And if so, can someone tell if it would need cloning in this particular car. Can I also tell what cluster will work as a replacement if I have the VIN or part number. I'd rather not take it out until I have a working replacement if that is what needs to be done, but it looks simple to get out so I might do that. I did see another thread that shows 3 different clusters, one grey, one white with extra top plug and one white with no extra plug (see: Focus Fanatics Forum) So does this mean there are 3 potential part numbers or many more (looking for used on ebay, some say to be sure to match part numbers). But I haven't seen anything about 'programming.' If I get the same working used cluster, will/might it just work even if the mileage is a little off? So appreciate any help from anyone, just like it to work for my kid so she doesn't have to use her phone for speedo:)...Thanks much! Rick
P.S. haven't posted here in a while (we've had 4 Focus's), so is this the right forum to post or should it be in first gen?

Rick,
I replaced the instrument cluster (IC) in my 2002 Focus SE wagon because I wanted to upgrade to a IC that had a tachometer. I did a bit of research at that time (3 years ago) and I determined;
1. The odometer mileage is stored in the IC and requires special equipment to change. There are vendors that will do this for a fee.
2. The IC you obtain must be from a Focus that had the same engine. This has to do with the connector on the back of the IC. SPI and Zetec engines used one type and Duratec engines used another type. Be certain the IC you get matches what you have. It may be best to match year as well.
3. No additional 'programming' is needed - or wasnt in my case. I purchased an IC that had the correct connector and then sent it to a vendor that revised the mileage the closely match my car. I installed it with no issues and has been working fine for 3+ years.

Hope this info helps
Good luck

Hi Paul,
Yes..thanks for your note. So glad you didn't need any 'cloning' or any programming other than for the mileage reading. I know I need to get the right part , so I'll pull the cluster from my daughter's car and get the right one (part number and connector). I actually saw one with close to her mileage for sale and if its the right connector, I imagine it will work even if the mileage is not updated. Wonder how much they charged you to get the mileage reset. Thanks so much and be well.

I did
Im fairly certain I used:
and it was about $60

Thanks..one last thing. I did get the part number and found a used cluster (with warranty) for $60. When you got the mileage reset, did you send them the cluster or can they do it with it already installed. Just wondering if I should bring it to a place after I install in the car or before...Silly but important. Again, thanks much and enjoy the holidays!

The place I used was in PA and Im in MA. I just sent the IC to them. They updated the mileage and shipped it back to me.

Be certain to use the pn that is on a bar coded printed label that is on the back or side of the IC for matching purposes. A pn that is molded into a plastic part is the pn for that plastic part - not for the IC. Too many ebay, etc, ICs are sold a having a pn that is one that is molded into the back housing - which is incorrect.

Good luck

Got and installed a used instrument cluster on 2003 Focus SE. Works great, but do have an ABS light..not even sure this car has an ABS system. Any way to clear (my scanner doesn't do ABS) and not sure if it will if there isn't even an ABS system. I tried the turn on, disconnect battery try...Any ideas other than taking out the bulb:)?
