I think my starter is shot. I can hear it spinning but it is not engaging. It started doing it only the odd time now it won't start the car at all. Just spins. No engagement at all.

So is that the starter or solenoid?

Do I replace both?

Thanks. I don't think it's the flywheel. If I keep clicking the key over and over eventually it will start. At lease that how it was for a few weeks. Now it won't engage at all. Also, it was only not engaging when it was warm (after driving). Always started in the mornings when cold.

I'll pull it out and look it over.

There are likely some plastic parts in that reduction drive there, they can break. The pull-in arm can too. The bendix can lose the one-way clutch too.

Thanks.

I tried it again last night and it turned the engine over for 1 second and that was it. Then the starter just spins and does not engage.

I removed the starter. The flywheel teeth look brand new. I have 12.5V at the large cable that attaches to the starter and 12.5V to the little one when the key is in the start position.

I bench tested the starter my self with jumper cables. It seems to work fine on the bench. I can get it to spin and I can get the solenoid to engage. Maybe because it's not under a load? I'm not sure. I'll take it in today to a starter shop and have it looked over.
