Had my brakes done all the way around about a year ago. The last few times I drove anywhere, I started hearing some slight grinding from the back end when braking. Then it rapidly got worse, now the front's grinding as well. Drove to the local small-town Greyhound station on Dec. 19th, it sounded iffy then. I was gone to Chicago until Dec. 28th, it sounded pretty bad on the way home. Stopped at the grocery on the way home, had to go to the bank the next day, but since then it's been parked, and I'm not going anywhere in it until I do the brakes.
Doing them myself this time. Ordering parts tomorrow, ceramic pads for the front, the shoes I'm ordering are supposed to be part metallic, part ceramic. Couldn't find just ceramic shoes, only the combo. Don't know if they're even made.
Any tips on preventing noisy, squealing brakes, or other problems? I've got disc brakes on the front, drums in the back.
I also replaced a wheel bearing on the rear passenger side, around the same time, thinking maybe I should do the driver's side bearing when I do the brakes. Wondering if I should just buy a new drum complete with bearing. The price, after buying just a bearing with retainer clip and a new spindle nut, is not much more. If I do that, should I replace drums on both sides? I'm gonna be outside working in pretty cold weather, probably trying to miss rain and/or snow, so the expediency is very appealing.
Might take it down to the barn to work on it, it'll still be cold, but I could work on it even if it's raining. The advantage to working up here at the house is that the tool shed's right there, and the ground's more level than in the barn. Ordering a rechargeable LED work light. I think that'll get a lot of use. Nice to have in the car, nice for working in the barn, which has no power.
This may sound dumb, but I have no idea whether I have ABS. Waiting for rain to slack off so I can go out and see if my manual says, or if I have a ABS light on the dash.
