I am installing a Escort radar detector in my 08 SES. I want to use the wiring harness plug on the back of the mirror to tap a power source for the detector. I have a wire tap kit that came with the Blendmount mount. The wire tap has 2 pins 1 red positive and 1 black negative. These pins are designed to plug into the holes on the back side of the plug. My question is, does anyone know the color of both the positive and negative wires on the mirror plug on the 08 SES?. The detector is a top of the line $500.00 Escort 9500ix and I don't want to fry the detector by reversing the polarity on the power leads. Any help with this? THANKS!

I personally have that radar too. Works VERY well. As far as power from the mirror. Take a multimeter and find a 12v source. Btw. If u reverse polarity on the radar, no damage will happen.

I would stongly recommend getting power from the ignition, not the mirror. that radar detector doesn't require much current, but the mirror isn't designed for more than what it's doing.

I have mine wired to the fuse box. But I sometimes use the smart plug

Thanks for the advice! I did check with Ford and the mirror fuse is a 15AMP the mirror pulls 4 amps and the Detector pulls less than 2 amps. The wiring kit I am getting is fused in line and the mirror is also fused. I guess the worse thing that could happen is a fuse will blow don't you agree?. I don't think any bad damage will occur as long as everything is properly fused. I will be pulling power BEFORE the mirror on the back of the plug. The suction cup mounts these Radar Detector companies provide SUCK!. The last thing you want to happen is your $500.00 top of the line detector crashing into the dash or floorboard!. Suction cups don't do well in hot cars on summer days! and most don't do well in -30 below 0 temps either!. I bet this mount will stay right where I put it!. I just thought one of the Focus "EXPERTS" would know the color code on the Focus wires so I could tell neg. from pos.

From the little I have messed with my 08, Red is normally positive and black the ground.

As for what to wire to, as long as there is a fuse somewhere between the battery/alternator, and whatever you are hooking up there wont be any damage.

I think that radar detector mount will look good along side of my tablet mount. Less coiled wires running around the cabin makes for a neater look. The quality high end mounts they make these days work GREAT and you can remove all equipment in seconds when leaving the car parked some where. Here is the mount for my tablet-

This is a photo of my neighbors auto with the Blendmount installed. As you can see this will look much better than a long coiled cord running from my power socket up across the windshield I bet this will be a great mod in my 08. I will post photos of this mount in my car soon.
and
I bet this wont fall off the windshield like a suction cup mount does!

I have my escort 9500i wired to the power and ground on my rear view mirror. All I did was cut, trim, tin, and back probed the connector. I didn't cut into the factory wiring. I don't have any issues. Use a zip-tie to hold the wires in place.

So what color is the power wire? I am color blind and cant tell from the pic.

John m, based on the schematic above, brown/yellow wire is power (verify 12 volt with multimeter) and black/yellow wire is ground. Recommend you solder all connections and seal with heat shrink tubing.

I wonder if i have the pin connector up there for the power mirror. Seeing this makes me want to do it. BUT $80 for just a mount? Thats ridiculous!

Hutch, don't know if your playing around or serious, but I'll explain for anyone else that might have a question.

The wire pinouts in the blue box (in the case the rearview mirror), are labeled with they're function. The wires coming out of the box (mirror) are labeled with the colors (ex. Pwr wire is labeled BN-YE which is a Brown wire with Yellow tracer. The color of the wires on the schematic itself do not normally indicate the wire color but instead what system the wire is a part of or what state the wire is in (ex. 12volt all the time)

If anyone has anymore questions or needs help reading schematics, let me know.

So, the wire marked BN-YE is the hot positive?

According to the schematic, yes. But as a safegaurd, like I said before verify with a multimeter.

i wouldn't be able to tap it into the mirror as i dont have the pin harness up there. Bummer
