well the first stages to engine modding on a zetec engine will be intake, exhaust and flex pipe, and header and then a tune (xcal or custom). this all together will be $750+ If you want a cheap easy mod, there are a few ways to modify the stock airbox to get it sucking some more air with a drop in filter.
I guess mostly mods that would help it breathe better, i.e. more efficient exhaust, or cooler air density via cool air intake or maybe short ram intake.
if you really want to get into it though, do some engine internals or forced induction i.e. turbo/super charger. another great improvement is suspension, and you can get an SVT kit that will fit on the SE for example, for around $300 more or less, depending where you get it from. Even try a lower engine mount (no hp increase, but much more solid shifting and something else, from what I've heard)
I guess I'd say though, my first mod (well, currently my only real performance mod) is the exhaust system, really helped with acceleration, and got rid of the awful looking "lunchbox" muffler famous on the focus. lol. I've heard intakes help in some way as well, and I plan to eventually do a really cheapo intake which consists of removing the stock air box and replacing it with a universal cone air filter. that can pretty much be done for the cost of a filter and a clamp. it's probably the cheapest hp you'd get, in my theoretical opinion (because I haven't done it yet, lol). there's also another option where you don't remove the airbox, and just get a K&N drop-in filter, which I hear are pretty much like getting an intake cause they're that great. lol.
just a helpful hint, any time you do a mod such as an intake or exhaust....... anything to do with the engine, disconnect the battery and drain the power from the car by pressing on the brake until all the lights go off (lol I know) then just power it up and let it sit there for a while with the car on so it goes through its relearning process and won't throw an error if something is against the norm. well is that good that it has a zetec in it or what????
so im not really good at this car quite yet im still learning........um i know that a AEM cold air intake ads about 12 hp to the ground but thats all i have really found...um how hard is a SVT header swap???
This is what I have done to my zetec without getting crazy............YET!
"2001 Focus SE Wagon - 2.0L 16v Zetec:OBX style header(shorty)with dowpipe, Long style CAI system with K&N filter,SP-463/478 (I switch back & forth)Motorcraft Plugs([email protected])Ford Racing 9MM plug wires"
well ud be lucky as hell to get 12whp from an intake. dont do anything cheaply to the motor. thats where u dont wanna go cheap as its kinda important. lol. an aem is a good intake. as for the svt header swap, theirs a bit to delve into with that. its not just a direct bolt in.
well i had it dynoed at a place by cordova race way.......thats what it put down...i guess it could be a factory freak lol but idk. its just a stock 16v zetec.....um as for the AEM intake thats what the specs say it quote un quote do to my engine lol.....
well...an intake will add more than 1 or 2hp. maybe like 5-6...but not 12. they advertise 12 to get u to buy it. i asked if u had anything done cause, ive never seen a stock zetec put down that much whp. i have an intake, throttle body, header back exhaust, and under drive pullies and im right at 120whp and 127wtq(on an atx). maybe the dyno was calibrated wrong or somethin. i dunno.
