I always hear people say the first three things to do to increase horsepower is exhaust, intake, and tune. I've just never been sure what a "tune" is. Is it like those chips that you buy to put in your car, or is it something that requires taking the car to a shop to do?

Current version is to use a "tune/scan tool" plugged into the OBD port to download your current "tune" to save it and replace it with one loaded into the tool by computer. You get the "tune file" from a "Tuner" like Tom (1Turbofocus) who is a vendor advertising here (FocusPower).

Custom tune can change a lot, from speed limiters to rpm limits to the most important part - changes to fuel injection & spark timing. They can also change shifting for automatic transmissions and in the Focus help get rid of the throttle hang that slows shifting for manuals.

Power wise, a custom tune can be changed to work with any other changes made that increase air flow for more power - you need the fuel to match or trouble can result & you don't get the full effect of any improvements.

Stock system can only adjust to a certain percent, and it doesn't adjust starting or WOT (wide open throttle) values.

Basically, if you want more power you need to flow more air & add the fuel to match. Tune is needed to do that.
