I got in the car today to drive it and it wouldnt go into reverse.. i tried a few times and finally got it in reverse, and i backed up some and then it was hard to get it out of reverse.. i put it in neutral and when i took my foot off of the clutch the rpms went down like it was trying to go somewhere and the car started rolling backwards. i put it in 1st gear and pulled it forward a little bit and then back to neutral and took my foot off of the clutch and it did the same thing, starting to go backwards again.

lately when i take my foot off of the clutch in neutral it makes a chattering noise but pushing the clutch in stops it. i dont know if that is related or not.

what do you guys think the problem could be?

First thing I would do is check the transmission shifter linkage/cable.

Go undere the shifter cover and look, and get under the car and look up where the tranny and shifter are. Also, the cluch has fluid in the resevoir, right?


Also, that chatter could be a throw out bearing. Have a mechanic buddy have a listen.
