I hope this isn't a dumb question, but the sound bothers me. 02 ZX5 5 speed. When I am low in rpm, the motor or trans sound like a diesel engine. I am not sure of the rpm range, but when it get higher it starts to sound normal. The sound is kind of like grinding...maybe. Any ideas?

Is that sound normal because it's in a low rpm range or? It's in each gear too.

That kind of sound is "normal" for when you'd want to choose a lower gear for the throttle setting you're using.

Low rpm it's only happy coasting along with light throttle, drop a gear or two as needed to accelerate.

Put your foot down & it "growls" and doesn't accelerate much, downshift & zoom.

Just guessing from description without RPM #'s, see for yourself if this matches what you noticed.
