So- I've been led to believe that the ZTEC 5 speed has ATF in it. Is this correct? Also, it should be changed at 80,000 miles. Mine now has a little over 50,000 on it- just bought it used from the dealer. I notice there is quite a bit of noise coming from the gearbox when I accelerate in too high a gear- like occasionally when the car's barely rolling you take off in 2nd instead of 1st- we all do that once in awhile right? The noise goes away once car is up to the speed that matches the gear you're in. Might this be a symptom that the oil should be changed, or is it just the nature of this gearbox to make a llittle noise when being lugged? Also, has anyone used Torco Synthetic MTF sold by BAT? They advertize it as a great improvement over ATF for the Zetec gearbox.

I'm not sure about the Focus but my old Escort 5 speed had ATF in it. Not sure if new fluid will fix the noise but are you sure you're not getting some detonation when you lug the engine a little. Maybe the noise isn't coming from the gearbox.

No- it's definately gear noise- sounds "ratchety" like gears meshed together. It's nothing like engine ping. I'm not particularly worried about it, as the gearbox is very smooth and slick. This is the first car that uses ATF in a manual transmission, so I'm accustomed to the good old 80 weight. I'm only speculating that 80 oil would absorb noise more effectively than ATF, and would like to know if anyone has experience with the synthetic ATF altarnatives cutting down the noise.

I have the same noise, changing the fluid didnt make it go away. Im not sure what it is, however it drives fine and nothings broke yet. I used the full synthetic ford tranny fluid, theres one actually made for ford focus manual transmissions. ask your parts department at the dealer to look it up, theres a blend one (natural/synthetic) and a full synthetic one, get the full one, works great in mine. The bottle actually says "ford fluid for focus manual transmissions" right on the front
