Check the shifter cables at both the shifter and the transmission.

Also, there is a mounting bracket about 14" away from where the cables connect into the transmission. There is a plastic, spring-loaded lock nut that holds the cable in place. You need to make sure that the cables are positioned correctly inside that bracket. I lost 5th and reverse because one cable had come loose and popped out of the mounting bracket.

interesting. i had the exact same thing happen, and i reached down in on the back of my transmission, and found that the plastic cup on the end of the cable had come off the ball. i snapped it back on and it was fine.

but i have already checked the cables. i can move the actual connector thats on top of the tranny up and down and around and still got no gears
Out of courisity, how are you testing this? If that is the case, then I would say its an interal transmission problem.

so i found out what it was. on the top of the tranny the actual shift shaft had to come off. when i took it off found out that the cold rolled pin that holds the assembly together to move the gears broke. so i had to replace the pin and now everything works fine again.
